We're going to be putting together a death/grindcore demo in my basement. Since our budget is next to nothing I can't afford the AT3035 that was recommended to me by a few people. So now the decision has come to using either the sm57 or 58 for vocals. I'm leaning towards the 57 but I wanted to get an opinion here first. Can anyone name any albums that used either of these for vocals?

Almost everything going into the mic will be growled. The mic will be run to a DMP-3 into a pc soundcard.

Thanks

of those 2, id pick the 57 with a pop-stopper......

why not look into a :

Studio Projects B1
Marshall MXLv990
Marshall MXLv67

The 57 is more of a instrument mic. The 58's pattern is a little more suited for vocals, but neither is any good without a good preamp.

Know too that if you unscrew the ball cap of the SM58, you have a mic that is near identical to the SM57, allowing you to experiment with both.

i would probably grab for the 57 with

a pop filter if those were my only choices. Since i record quite a bit of metal vocals i would like to add that lots of compression seems to usually help get the sound i like for this style.

SM 58

Yea man I'm not an expert but I too am into intense music, my favorite band is morbid angel, but the sm 58 has that pop thing in it so you don't get that cracking sound like you would with the 57. You could get one of those screens for the 57 and they sound good on vocals but for recording growls and screaming i would totally recomend the 58.

Thanks for the advice guys. We ordered a Studio Projects B1, hopefully we like the results, we could always fall back on the 57 though.

One last question, should we be using a pop screen for the B1? Where is the best place to buy them online?

Probably 8thstreet.com.

You can make them though. Just go to a fabric store, get an embroidery hoop, stretch panty hose around it, and find some way to mount it to a mic stand. I took the bottom of a mic clip and attached it to the thumbscrew-like pin at the bottom of the embroidery hoop, and then i just attached it to a free mic stand. Voila!

B1 is a good choice. But i still would have started with a 57 :(.

Crapmaster - What cracking noise would you get when using a 57 on vocals? If the two mics are practically identical besides the ball filter then why would the 58 be better with growls and screaming? Plus the 57 would be easier to use and more protective when he is micing a snare or a guitar cab. The afro ball is simple and easy and doesnt looks cool anyway.

Jblount - What patterns are better on the 58 for vocals? With the ball off the proximity is the same, the polar pattern is probably nearly identical, and the EQ is nearly identical. The preamp thing is true with all mics ;). But infact i think its alot easier to get away with a cheaper preamp with a 57 then most other mics. Even Behringer mixers get a decent sound on a 57 in my opinion.

Im definately not trying to offend or challenge intelligence here, im just trying to inform you. I also think you should really find out the information and the technical stuff with experience and stuff instead of just telling us what shure already tells us "the 57 is an instrument mic and the 58 is a vocal mic." There is alot more too it. Like i said im not trying to be a dick in any way, im just trying to inform you and get a little more source to backup what you say.

They are nearly the same, i should have stated that i have had better luck using the sm57 as an instrument mic, and the sm58 as a vocal mic. Both mics are great, i love the sure line, and u cant beat the price, for a 57 or 58.

If you want to be really cheap bend a coat hanger and put the pantyhose around that.

Pop pop pop

Does this would give the same result than one you buy in music store?
