I guess this is technically my first online collaboration. On my last post, I had a fairly harsh vocal.....remixed it.....still had a harsh vocal.

Erichenryus offered his hand at trying to mix the vocal. I warned him that it might be an attempt at polishing a turd as there was some digital distortion during the chorus. Nonetheless, he did a great job.

The track is clearly much warmer than before (dammit, i wanted to blame it on my equipment). The digital distortion from my lack of hardware compressor is still evident, but minimized compared to before.

I just poped in the vocal track and added a touch of verb.

The old track is still up there for comparison, the new one is called 'Just for You (Erichenryus Remix)'.

I'm pretty confident that this is a clear improvement on my last mix. For anyone who listened to the last one, I'd like to hear their opinion.

And thanks a million Erichenryus......so what exactly did you do? I'll take notes

Listened to both:

Definitely the second version (the Erichenyrus version) has a warmer sound and is more pleasing to the ears.

The acoustic in the background sounds like it could come up just a tad in the breaks. I like the bacground vocals in the second version...they helped to bring the song more to life. The main vocal sounded like there were a few places where there were tone issues, especially on the notes that are held...I have tone issues myself all over my recordings, so I'm not a good one to talk about this...for the most part they were on though, and I dug the song :) I like the acoustic sound and the reverb sounded well placed on the second version!

Overall nice collab :)

boydrj - i agree with the tone issue, i think some of it comes from not having a hardware compressor and i had to hold back, some of it comes from the fact i only did a couple takes, and most comes from the fact that i've still got room to improve on my singing:D .....thanks for taking the time...

fprod - thanks for checking it out again....i'm glad there's an obvious improvement......

well i'll be damned. it does sound better. i think i've learned something here! i took a little lesson from the darth faders school of vocals. i beat that fucker into submission! did you look at the wave? you could lay a ruler on top of that thing now. lol.

i ran it through five software stages! lol.

1. heavy vocal compression in timeworks compressor.
2. sonic foundry multi band in de-esser mode. although, i think that first s could still use sssssssssome work. i just ran out of time and energy. ssssssssorry.
3. Sonic foundry warmer
4. Sonic foundry wave hammer. god i love that thing.
5. sonic foundry enhancer, to give it just a tad of the harmonic distortion effect.

dithered down from 24 to 16 in sound forge and cut to VBR mp3.

not sure if all that costs more than a hardware compressor, basically everything is available in sonar 2xl plus sonic foundry sound forge but i've been goofing around with those settings for my own vocals the last couple days and really like the results i'm getting.

i can post pictures of the plugin settings later if you want.

i did notice that it was quite flater of a wave.......i was particularly impressed with the warmth though, compared to mine..........so am i seeing that the only eq work you did was de-essing??

i'd love to see the software settings.....particularly the timeworks compressor, cause that's what i use too.....

i really appreciate the help, you did a great job considering all you had was the dry vocal.......i literally just popped it into the track, added a touch of verb and that was it...........

thanks

I remember the song now. When you come in with those Ma7ths in the beginning I start singing Tin man. Great sound, very good music IMHO.

I like the whole thing, it's a very soothing sound. Very nice vocals and great style! You really say a lot here with minimal instrumentation.

Good job!

Joe

Definite improvement to my ears. Seemed to smooth everything out a bit and warm it up too. Seems like an awful lot of work though. There must be an easier way! Nice song Powder. I like this one.

Hey, I was just about to say that...

As for the rest of the mix, great job erichenryus! Very warm, and it's much better than the original. Fix the silibances and I'm a happy puppy...

O wait, Powderfinger mixed the other tracks right? They sound good too!

and Powderfinger, before you ask us next month why nobody said anything ... Dobro-style ;) ... I'm hearing some intonation problems in your vocals....

Nice. The vocals do sound better. Everthing does. I would like to hear the left accoustic come up during that run at 1:52.

The song certainly sticks with you. Great job to both of you!

I re-downloaded both versions and listened back to back. Yeah eric's modifications really helped the song considerably. The warmer vocal was perfect for the song. Good job. Now you just need harmonies :D:D:D.

Now I gotta go check out Sonic Foundry's web site. God I hope it's not expensive. :)

yep sounds a lot better! I prefer my hardware (RNC) compressor over my softs...actually I don't use my softs anymore and I have plenty of 'em (I don't do any mastering either though). But when you're rescuing a track, it's the only choice. And Eric did a great job here. It does sound a bit digital, but that's probably due mostly to the sibilance. Sounds really good. Maybe just a little eedy beedy bit over compressed. I would have liked a touch more dynamic to have been preserved in the vocal. I'm not a big fan of Darth's compression methods to be honest. But for radio competition it's probably a requirement! I don't know much about that stuff.

Anyway, I really really like this song still Powder. The mix is better than version 1 as I recall too. Nice job!

Smokepole - thanks for listening

twist - i hope there's an easier way too. hopefully a hardware compressor will be the answer for me.....

Pedullist - thanks for listening....i hear ya on the intonation problems....part of it is laziness (i usually just cut two vocal tracks and take the best parts of each)......but if anything, it is the main thing i need to work on......multiple takes should be the answer for me.....my goal is for my next recording to be spot on pitch wise

skids - thanks for taking the time

TripleM - thanks for checking it out again...i'm gonna have to check out sonic foundry too......i didn't really hear any good harmonies w/ this one yet, but i know they're there....i'll keep searching for them

SLuiCe - thanks for listening again.....where did you get your RNC by the way?........in the coming month or two i'm going on a complete sluice gear copying binge......i think i really need that rnc....and i love the drum kit from hell....gotta get that too

thanks guys.....i'm glad the remix was a success

I think I got the RNC from Mercenary. It's relatively inexpensive, but works well with practice.

Why do I have this feeling in 6 months everybody here is gonna have the same drum sound? I better start looking for something new...

good point........i'll stick w/ what i got...........or do something profound and get myself a new real drummer to play w/......i miss those days

haha! Man I hear that. I'd love to work with a real drummer again. It's just that they're so damn expensive to feed....

Mix is nicer I think. Vocals sound clearer and the bass has a nicer sound to it. Here's where you say that nothing has changed with the vocals and bass) I like the guitar tone better, but having less verb on it sticks it a liitle out on the edge of the mix compared to the first one.
Around 215 I get the same glitch on each of these for some reason. I thought it was a computer bog down thing on my system untill I heard it in the same place on the second version.

Nice song, short and sweet.

Doug - thanks for listening again.......yeah, i was listening again last night and it is a lot less reverby than the first couple mixes, which kind of suites the instrumentation........i need to look for that glitch at 2:15 and find what went wrong there

very clean, smooth, and full (even without the verb). 'got a signature vocal, a few tight spots but its cool. I was thinkin (which is often dangerous or expensive for me) you could hang a nice harmony on the hook lines, would give a nice dynamic change. Possibly a tamborine or "shik" sound thingy that only makes a soft hit on 4 would give it an illusion of more depth. I really like the tune and can see the work ya did.

cool song.. I'm listening on new speakers so I can't offer any useful mixing suggestions.. the vocal did seem just a bit sibilant in a few spots.. nothing life threatening.. harmonies would be cool.. I liked the tune!
