If you've heard so many different things, then I guess there is no standard!

Whatever sounds good works for me.

I was reading about how Weezer recorded their first album, when they were trying to get a good guitar sound, they tried different mics, mic position...they couldn't get anything that sounded good, so finally they tried turning the amp down to an almost inaudible level, and that's what worked..and those guitars on that album sound good.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how loud to make the amp combo when recording guitar. Ive herd so many different things and my technique seems to work for me but I was wondering if theres a standard.

It seems that with my old tube peavey classic with a distorted sound about half way up is good. With a clean sound a little more than a quarter is good. People tell me its to low but its a really old (like 68-70) tube combo and it gets overdriven real easily. Especially on the clean channel. When its real loud the highs are peircing and I need to compress the hell out of it so I just keep it lower and it sounds OK.

where were you reading about making the weezer album? I love their production and would like to hear more about their recording.
