Ok. I own a Dell Optiplex GX270 desktop w/a 160G hard drive, purchased refurbished in 2007. It's sole purpose is for recording, editing, and cd burning with occasional dvd ripping and burning. As a result of a power outage last summer (while the comp. was active but just in standby during a suspended session), it appears that my hard drive fails on me w/o warning. I will be in a session (Adobe Audition 1.5 software), and my screen will collapse unannounced and the comp. goes into a kind of "default hibernation". When I start-up, the comp. never completes the entire action and thus returns to "default hibernation". Anytime I try to access folders under Device Manager, I still get the same collapse. I've been told that this may be a hard drive issue, but I am convinced there is a lot more affected. Any takers??

Had same comp. Same power failure. My power supply had to be replaced.

If you have a separate video card check that its fan is running at full speed. In fact you should check that all the system fans are running and not clogged. If the Northbridge chipset fan is slow then the video will collapse and only a system reboot will fix it for a while. Does the computer run okay when not using Audition?

No. I run into problems using FL6, Windows Media...pretty much anything that uses a lot of RAM. I had a friend remove my vid card, and insert one of his good ones. Nothing changed. I didn't however, check ANY of the fans. Will the PC gradually get louder if it's combating a lot of dust?

It depends on whether in the computer BIOS a fan speed monitor has been activated that has fan speed control. You can sometimes tell without going into the bios (hold the delete key down when booting up) by looking at the fan cables. If they have three wires then they are designed for speed control.

If I were you I would try to disable hibernation (and delete the hiberfil file) . Firstly it uses up too much of your small hard disk capacity and secondly it uses up too much Windows resources. Hibernation should be used only for laptops so you can just shut the lid when travelling.
