Hi Folks
I've panned the guitars wider, attempted to even out the vocals & added tambourine.
Basically it's a very narrow mix - not much to spread I'm afraid.
The main guitar is stereo hard panned as are the drums. The bass, tambourine, chorus guitar & vocals sit dead centre. All I can do to accentuate the panning is to alter one of the channels of the stereo guitar - I can do that but by altering what would be the question.

Let me know!

Ray...I really like this. It is so 70's. It is a bit more center/left panned sounding for my taste.

Is the reason that mixes sound more balanced with the cans on, because of the close proximety to ones ears? You know, the shorter distance it takes for the sound to reach them.

On my headphones, it sounds balanced in sound...but on my monitors, it goes way center/left panned sounding.

The song sounds good. It really catches on with me. :)

On the cans the rhythm guitar buries the vocals in quite a few spots, but on the monitors the volume sounds perfect of both.

Flute is a nice touch. Don't hear those anymore in rock.

true-eurt,
Thanks for the inds words. I'll play the wave file on a few devices to investigate the odd changes you've noted & remediate as necessary.
The flute is a nice touch isn't it? That & Rami's drumming really lift this piece.
Again ta.

You are welkom ray. I love the flute. It adds that nostaligic feel to any song.

Yah....I should be shot on site for not mentioning the drummer....so go ahead....shoot the piano player!! :D

Great drums Rami!!! :) :) :)

Very very nice. Tight rhythms, good tone on eveything. I'd bring down the flute a little in the intro. Good vocal. I think the guitars and vocal are competing somewhat for the lower mids space. Maybe see how it sounds with a slight cut in one or both in the 350 Hz range. Great drums Rami.

Tim

Hey rayc.... The vocals are still a bit low for my taste. I'm still struggling to understand the words. Perhaps some eq carving on the guitars/vocals as suggested by Tim would bring them out. Reduce 350hz from guitars and/or raise on the vocals.

BTW I'm listening on headphones and the mix is fairly center, and the drums are nicely panned. Works for me! The tambourine works well in the chorus' too.

:) :D :) :D

Timothy & Ido,
I'll try the EQ cut'n' boost tomorrow. I'll also try something around that freq. to give the stereo guitar image some variation L - R to address the overly centred stereo image. A nip here & a tuck there so to speak.
I'll tame the chorusing on the flute intro to see if that brings it back to acceptable volume levels & if not I'll just pull back the vol. on it.
Thanks for the tambourine idea Ido - I'd decided to only add what was recommended as I'd become a little predictable with augmentation.
Terry'd like some 'cello in the bridge but I'm not certain. Any thoughts?
True - I seem to get an acceptable stereo image on my end but I do have one ear that's a bit of a dud. Any other concerns re the stereo image out there?

Sure - try the cello in the bridge and see how it fits. If your are multitracking you should be able to include/exclude depending on how it sounds when you mix it down.

Tim, Ido & anyone else interested,
I've tweaked the EQ as suggested. Down in the guitars & up in the vocals with a little extra bump in the guitars, diff on each side, to enhance the seperation.
I've also reduced the flute in the intro by 10 points in the volume & scraping off a fair chunk of chorus FX as well.
Things appear or is that ahear fairly even in the stereo image department with this one.

Does this do the trick gentlemen?

I think the balance thing, just may be a matter of preference.

The flute is right on ray!

Sounding good. :)

I really dig this...I'm a big fan of Jethro Tull, so I love to hear flute in rock music.Cool tune, can't really judge the panning on the system I'm listening on now, but everything sounds well placed in the mix and nothing seems to be conflicting sonically.
Great song,enjoyed it!

Hey....nice job on it Ray.......sounding very good. To me, the vox could still come up just a little. Not a whole lot, so that they don't hide stuff, just a small amount more.

Cool tune though.....and it's sounding really good.

Good song...what he said ...really 70's
Do I understand correctly that RAMI added drums?? If so, very well done by all.
I agree that the vox could be more forward, either by EQ or maybe a different mic

all in all grade A

Dogman,
ta mate. A touch more vox is on the cards as is the most frequently called for adjustment - can't hear the need myself but I know the lyric so am not translating on the run.
chazba,
Yep, RAMI offered to thump tubs on this & we did the little file exchange thing (1st time for me) & not only did he do a fabulous job I learnt a lot about inserting audio files, nudging to synch up etc. so as a process it was a) REALLY GOOD and b) REALLY GOOD. I'd also have to mention that Rami was particularly & by turns patient, enthusiastic & generous leading me through a new process - THANKS RAMI.
I had EQ'd the guitars & vox to create some room for both following Timothy's guide BUT was timid in the application. I'll go back in & increase the alterations.
As to being a 70's song - I began my teens in 1970 so am a creature/product of that decade I guess.
variaxman,
You are very kind mate. I rather enjoy the odd Tull moment myself.

Yes - this is now a really good mix....

Vocals are easy to hear and sit "just on top" of the instruments.

Guitars, drums, bass are all nicely balanced.

Rami - you did an excellent job on the drums and they really make this rock now.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you how many times I've had this running through my head....... :D

Excellent!

:) :D :) :D

Hey guys...I avoided posting in this thread because it's RayC's spotlight. Just want to thank you all for the kind words on the drumming. I wouldn't have offered to play on this if I didn't fall in love with the feel and groove of the tune as soon as I heard it.
I'm proud to have tub-thumped on this like a real Cobber!!!! :p:p:p

sounds great on my end. drums sound top-notch along with everything else. if anything, for my tastes, the vocals sound too 'trippy'. but maybe thats the vibe you want in this sort of material. overall though i think its great. good job guys. :)

OK folks,
The current mix has Ido1957's, Rami's & Greg L's tick so I'll leave it at that. I contemplated & tried lifting the vox some more BUT it passed into the realm of me not liking it then so I figured best fit for all rather than ignoring my own tastes to please.
THANK YOU every one involved - another successful mix by the Camel Comm. I look forward to typing Mixed by The Camel Committe C/-HRBBS onto a slick some day.
Special thanks to Rami - because to quote Sonny Bono "...the beat goes on." & didn't it make a bloody great difference to the song too? From a comfy but apologetic little groove to a propulsive & confident groove & big beat.
Greg L - Thanks for the kind words. The trippy comment has been made a few times in relation to my stuff. I'm intrigued. What is it that gives you that impression?
