Ok, I know this is for building studios, and I am currently doing that with a friend. But the other side of building the studio is the business side. So here's my questions to all you studio owners that do it for money...

1. What are the studio services that you consider the best for making good $$$ (ie, tracking, mastering, surround mixing, editing...)

2. What services would you like to offer to make good $, but you currently don't...

3. Do you work full time at it, and make a good income, or is it feast to famine? (would you even recommend this field?)

Thanks for your replies. I am just currious what trials and tribulations I am about to face. My partner is a very experience studio jock, and I am his humble side kick.

Good luck with all your endevours,
Kirk out.

If you are going to the trouble of building a proper facility and your partner is experienced I would aim primarily at offering a good mixing service. Most of the studios around here get good work from mixing the work done by others at home. They come to you because you have good monitors/acoustics, good outboard gear and hopefully a good mix engineer.

cheers

Multimedia services may be something to offer, the equipment for doing anything with multimedia is really cheep compared to pro audio gear.

Offer services like recording sound effects for games, computer programs, videos and stuff.

Get a basic digital video editing suite setup to be rented out.

Rent out live audio gear.

There is lots of stuff you can do to supplment a recording business.

I'm going to setup a multimedia studio insted of just a recording studio that way not all my eggs are in one basket.

Services I have in mind to offer:
- audio recording (Demo CD's and stuff)
- Video production (Live studio, digital editing, etc...)
- Multimedia CD (Everything from digital business cards to full blown programs)
- Printing services (posters, flyers, photo printing, etc..., I'm currently doing this for a realestate office right now)
- Live location multitrack audio and video recording(weddings, gradautions, music videos, concerts, festivals, etc...)
- Web design

Basicly all forms of media. I live in an area with a small population that really can't support a full time studio so in order to surive off it I have to offer as many diffrent serivces as possiable.

I totally agree with John! A lot of people these days do recordings at home simply because the equipment is getting cheaper and cheaper. But the mixing stage is REALLY hard for people to do at home because of all the outboard gear, nice monitors, acoustics, etc....

Ummmm....Yeah..... What John said! :D

Actually.........I've been thinking about it and in fact the guys who make the most money - i.e. get the highest rate for their studio, is the TV soundtrack studios. If you get the whole picture to sound thing together and have the skills (hardest part) you can charge high bucks for your facility.

cheers
John
