The studio I have been working at scored one of these units today. I am blown away. Tracked vocals, acoustic guitars, distorted guitars, shakers, and tamborenes with it. Amazing sound, especially with Monster SP 1000 direct from the mic to the preamp! Heh....:) A $2600 dollar signal path, which included the AKG 414 that seemed to excel with this impressive preamp!

http://www.oram.co.uk/main.html Click on MWS in the left hand frame. (bad website alert! but the gear is top notch!)

EQ Magic is simply that! We tracked to tape making sound the way we wanted them and left the console eq flat.

If you are considering a class A preamp/eq mix, this unit will be compete with an API pre any day of the week, but has a MUCH better EQ! I forsee it becoming my preamp of choice....:)

cool.

can we hear some vocal samples. PLEASE.
not that we can afford it though.

How would you say it compares to a symetrix 528

Don't insult John Oram, the same man that designed preamps and eq circuits for the big time Trident consoles that so many hits were recorded and mixed on with such a silly non-competitor and Suckmetrix! ;)

This is truly class A design.

You will hear voice, acoustic guitar, and probably triangle examples very soon here when I do my mic cable shoot-out using this preamp.

Ed

thanks sonusman for the offer to post stuff soon.

Symetrix is like the industry standard in broadcasting, and I must say, from the samples I've heard, its awesome.

This just means that the oram must be FREAKING great.

Sorry Craig, haven't used that piece to comment.

Suckmetrix is NOT in league with the Oram! None of it ever will be. Period, end of discussion.

I will be posting no mp3's of the test I will be doing comparing mic cables. I will be offering a CD with .wav and/or .aiff files at 24 bit 48KHz sampling rate for a very reasonable price that will mostly cover cost of compliling all the cable used, printing CD's, shipping, and a solitary single $2 for my time per CD. You can draw your own conclusion comparing Monster Studio Pro 1000, Monster Performer 500, Mogami (two different grades they offer), Belden, Canare Star Quad, Sundholm Silver tinted quad, Gotham, Horizon, Whirlwind, APC, and ProCo mic cables.

The plan is to use three different mics. A AKG 414, and AT 4050, and a Neumann U87, through three different preamps, the Oram, a ART Pro MP, and a Mackie. The test will include a male vocal, a acoustic guitar, and a triangle.

This will be happening next week. Half of what these test are for is to decide which cable will be the best bang for the buck the studio I am working at will be used to rewire the whole studio with. The added benefit is that you all will have the opportunity to hear what different grades of mic cables, through a whole variety of mic preamps, and a few different standard large diaphram mic will sound like on a few different "typical" applications where fidelity and detail are very important. Totally worth the $10 price I will ask for the CD that contains all the source recordings.

Stay tuned!

Oh, let's not again confuse the sonic benefits of a $2200 preamp with a "budget" piece of gear! ;) Suckmetrix just doesn't roam in the Oram league of things.

Ed, thats not very nice putting down Symetrix by callin them that. Not good form at all.

Why not put up clips? server space? I'll provide it. If your going through these tests anyway, why not?

That's just his boyish enthusiasm. :D Whenever he really likes something, anything less good sucks bigtime, so to speak. I'd take it more as a reflection of how good the Oram is. $1100 a channel for ace pres and EQ? Hmmm.... You must be interested, right, Ametth? :)

yeah not cool putting down Symetrix like that...isnt that Sjoko's buddy that runs Symetrix?......

Oh, you know me to well dobro!! hehe

I can't believe that ametth, the gear snob, is chiding ME on putting down Symetrix! ;)

Ed

So, are you going to take up my offer for server space?

Servers and downloads would mean mp3s, right? CDs would mean full 16/44.1 in all its digital glory. Mind you, doing it with mp3s would be employing the NS-10M principle - if you can hear it on this kind of gear, it *must* be good.

We could do both, I would be happy to put up the wav files and mp3's, with a nice little webpage with neat links to everything. ED?

Sorry, there will be no MP3's of these tests. Too lossy.

I will be doing the full on formal tests this coming week.

I will be cool, and anybody considering what wire they want to purchase for their setup will find the low price of the CD I will offer to be cheap to help settle the debates.

:)

Ed

I agree about not using mp3's, wavs would be the only way to go. And it's not that I'm a cheapskate or anything, but it really seems like it's more trouble than it's worth considering the low price of the cd...I was just trying to help you get this to the most people possible, so they can make an informed decision about wire. Also you should do a blind test... on this CD, we're going to know what the wire is, and that will come into play on the decision of what sounds the best. (if you want it to sound good, no matter what, your brain will make it sound good). I think it would be a great learning tool for the members of this bbs.

Actually, I don't think it is more trouble than it is worth for the price at all! It is not going to cost me that much money to produce the CDR's, and if anything, not having to go through the hassle of posting on a website is a godsend! :)

Ed

HEY!!! this thread was about the Oram MWS!!! Not mic cable tests!!! Buzz off you little shrimp! ;)

So the motivation is money? You should have said that in the first place..I thought you were doing this for the greater good!!

It's not a hassle at ALL for you, I would do all the work. Oh well, I guess that's what napster is for [g]....hehe
