Hello,
My name is Troy Seegert. I have been playing music/recording music for the better part of 20 years. I started out on a Vesta Fire 4 track, and graduated to a Roland VS1880, which I have been using for almost 14 years. I recently decided to switch to computer-based recording, and now use Reaper, and EZDrummer. I love these programs, and the versatility of both completely waste the 1880 and DR 880 combo. I have been listening intently through my headphones, while I get the hang of using both of these programs, and decided to (until I get my hands on a nice interface) use my laptop as a "drum machine". Basically, I was going to use a stereo line out of my laptop, into two tracks input on the 1880. Like I said, this is temporary until I get an interface, but I cant wait any longer to start tracking guitars on top of the amazing drum patterns I have been making.

The problem; when listening through the headphones, I can hear the drum panning perfectly, which incidentally is great with its default settings. When I run out of the stereo line out from my laptop (using a stereo jack splitting to two mono) the panning says "bye-bye". Even if I pan the tracks on the machine, it does not retain any panning. I bought the stereo jack from Radio Shack, and it occurred to me that it may be possible they are not actually dividing the left and right signal, but merging them into left and right simultaneously. Then I thought that was just dumb... what would be the point?

Anyways, any ideas on how I could hook this up, any settings or otherwise I may be missing to keep the stereo image intact coming into the VS1880 would be grandly appreciated.

Well met, and I look forward to sharing many ideas with you all.

If I'm reading your post correctly....

There are adaptors that would send a stereo signal to both ends of the Y connector. You might have gotten the wrong type of connector like you first thought.

None the less, you are asking for suggestions on a new interface and that is really what you should be using.

I recently bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and I like it. It should do the job well for you.
There are others. Check out this list. I suggest starting at about the $150 mark....
