"The Moth" - a recent collab

(((links removed)))

you should be able to download or stream either one...

this is an Aimee Mann song, that my friend Jim (who has never recorded, or been recorded before) wanted to do. this was a one afternoon kind of session, first takes, very quick and down and dirty.

i produced it, and played (2) electric guitar tracks on top of his (3) acoustic tracks and vocals.

he really enjoyed it, i think i might have provided him with enough care to want to put a small recording rig together and start writing songs.

any comments on the mix are appreciated.

a lot of views, but no comments at all....
oh well.
i thought this one was pretty cool.....
moving on.

No need to apologize, sarcastically or sincerely. I'm just saying, that might be why you don't get much action.

On the plus side, maybe your mix is so good that no one has anything to comment about.

I don't spend a lot of time crawling through the posts here anymore, usually only when I see something with no replies I'll jump in and offer feedback if needed (for the very reason I guess the link(s) got pulled? members get the impression no one's listening?).

Gonzo -- it's hard to give feedback when there's no link to the music. :-/

Starting with all the acoustics at once is a little disconcerting, but it works later on. Not familiar with the original, but can tell it's an Aimee song - she;s more than a little repetitious in her chords and lyrics.
Nice dueling lead guitar stuff.

I like it! The vocals were well performed and the acoustic sound is very good.

There's a few lines/word choices that a cringe worthy, but the 'moth' idea is clever and mostly well executed lyrically.

The vocals and one of the rhythm acoustic tracks sit on top of each other, I'd pan the acoustic and let the vocals sit alone with the bass dead center.

There's something about the guitar harmonics that caught my ear in a bad way. The other guitar embellishments are nice (and some creative). I think maybe the choice of harmonic notes is what isn't working for me (?).

Reminds me a little of the acoustic Beck stuff, with the odd electric parts swirling around the song.

It could use some drums IMO, even if it's just a very basic beat. Being an upbeat composition the drums will only enhance that dance-able feel.

i kinda like the 'bang, start!' beginning...

maybe if it was my arrangement, i would have introduced a little melody at the beginning....

i had never heard the song before i put my riffs on top,
so i don't know if it's in keeping with the original or not,
but you can hear it's wide open for interpretation

thanks for listening and commenting

aimee and her cringe worthy lyrics......!
LOL

voices carry, that whole song is cringe worthy..... i think that's what she's going for.

i have one rhythm in the middle, and two others hard left and right....
maybe the sonics of the middle guitar (a cedar top seagull) are too close to the deeper vox eq....
i'll play with that.

the guitar harmonics, might be warbly due to the vibe pedal i used on those tracks...

i may go back and put in some real clean artificial harmonics instead,
like the synth line does in the original.

i think that would be spot on!

and i'm still on the fence about whether to go to the trouble of placing drums on top..
it would TOTALLY work, tho, i'm thinking almost a dry dead set, ala steve gadd, might work.....
thanks for checking it out

That's pretty much what I was thinking, add some groove without stealing the show.
