Oh here's to my sweet Satan.
The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan.
He will give those with him 666.
There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.

Damn. That is pretty freakin' good man. This is the best mix I've heard of yours so far I think. It's really tight too. I hear a bunch of different influences here.

I don't understand how you coordinate all these varying riffs and melodies and stuff over such a long period. It sounds like some stuff is double tracked even?

The only mix thing for me was the keyboard/synth sounds (especially at first) were kinda dry and loud compared with the other instruments. I'd drop 'em back a bit with verb and/or the fader to blend in better maybe? This was a great listen for me though and I think it's a great recording.

I hope I don't burn in hell, but that was great. How many different time signatures are there?? No nits on the mix. Dialed in nicely. I think this goes way beyond the typical home recording project of 2 guitars and three chords. I listened to the whole thing waiting for the vocals to kick in. Instrumentals always trip me up like that. :D

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Pete! I'm kinda psyched about it right now, I think it's a step up for me mixwise though I realize I still have far to go. I think you're right about those first synth chirps, maybe some volume automation is called for...as I listen more to the mix I'm noticing a few other things that could be tweaked and a couple drum gaffes that jump out at me more and more. :(

I actually started this one a couple years ago as a rough guitar/piano "demo" and abandoned it til a couple weeks back. It's been bouncing around in my noggin on and off though, so when I went back to it I had maybe more ideas than it could really hold... Thanks for checking it out!

Aw Chili, I'm pretty sure you won't burn. The Little Toolshed thing's a Zep reference, and this is kinda my homage to Stairway, the great-granddaddy of all tacitly satanic rock odysseys. It is my hope that it someday reaches Page-and-Plant's geriatric ears and they maybe use it in their next feature film! :p

Thanks a lot for checking it out, and the kind words....I'm not sure what the time sig is, I think 3/4 or 6/8 (??) but I guess I push and pull at it a little.

I never got into all that rock-trivia stuff. I'm lame like that. :)

I'm surprised at the re-emerging interest with Zeppelin these days. Talking to a few teens around here and they all are sayin how they are into Zep. I'm not nostalgic about classic rock in any sense of the word, but it's cool to see a great band stand the test of time.

I think it's a step up for me mixwise...

Absolutely! Really, it was like night and day when I heard this. I like your previous stuff a lot, but mix-wise, this sounds so much fuller and clear. What'd you do differently? Anything substantial? Just curious...

...when I went back to it I had maybe more ideas than it could really hold...

I don't think so. All of the changes are really cool and go together well, I just can't comprehend tracking all of it myself. Drums sound awesome by the way...

Agree with all the other posts Fleet that this is easily the best from you in terms of mix/recording quality - you got a nice full sound and the recordings sound much bigger than the earlier mixes I heard from you. Always a tough job to pull off folk/rock instrumentals without descending into self-indulgent wankery, but I think you've done it well here - everything adds to the tune, despite constant shifting.

The drums sound particularly good and nothing stands out as needing fixing. Good stuff dawg!

Yeah truth be told, it's "been a long time" since I rocked out to the Zep..I just get a kick out of the whole Jimmy Page/Aleister Crowley business...

I don't really know. One thing that was definitely different is I used the center pickup position on the bass rather than just the bridge pickup as I've done in the past. I often go out of my way to get more top end definition with bass, but this time I just kinda let that go and decided to let the higher instruments own that space. Also I've started using a multiband compressor on the master bus, which I only recently found out about :o, not sure if there was one on the last tune...other than that I guess I've just had a little more practice, not that this is perfect by a long stretch. :)

Thanks for checking it out rob! Looking forward to hearing the next one from you as well. Really love the words you wrote for heatmiser's new song too.

Ok, I put up a new mix...automated the volume on the first synth chirps and dialed up the reverb a little..
Also got rid of a 200Hz pillow that was bothering me in the acoustic guitar during the intro, and dialed back the verb on the clean electric solo in the middle which was also bugging me.

Thanks man - Heat chopped up the words quite a bit to get the meter, which made the theme a little more opaque. I'm not generally a fan of in your face song meanings so that's all good with me.

Hopefully not too far off having something new to post up - I've moved on from swearing at computer parts/soundcards/software setup and am now swearing mainly at my own vocal limitations. Progress of sorts...

Well I thought it came out awesome. I d/l'ed it and have listened to it a few times. :)

I was listening to those satanic back masked lines a couple of days ago on an Ethan Winer video.

Hey this is a pretty good listen. You've got some nice melodies going and the transitions are very smooth. 8 minutes is more than my usual attention span will accommodate, but I ended up listening to this three times and enjoyed it more each time. Got an early 70s vibe to it

Yeah this is pretty good. Way, way too long and monotonous for me, but you did a good job on everything. I think the drums get a little weak towards the end when things pick up a little. The snare is a little thin. But overall it's pretty decent and sounds period correct.

I had to google Ethan Winer....still not sure I know exactly who he is... When I was in high school me and my friends had one of those tapes put out by a religious group exposing all the back-masking in popular music. It was a total hoot! It had all the classics- "Turn me on dead man", "It's fun to smoke marijuana"...the big long one from Hotel California.... I think even ELO was supposed to have one - hilarious!

Thanks alot for checking it out dude! Yeah it's a little lengthy but I just couldn't bring myself to chop it anywhere. :(

Thanks man. I know you're not crazy about the hippy-dippy shit so I appreciate you checkin it out...:)

I dug it! The weird time signature thing really engaged my intrest . Like the guitars a lot, lots of cool sounds!

well its musicianship well beyond my skills, love all the layering...keeps it all interesting for what is a pretty long track...what would this genre be described as?

I obviously like the little synth sounds, drove me deep into my trip just as the second wave of rushes came on, then I could feel my cheeks glow and feel fit to burst as the the next set of guitars came in...hang on I havent had any LSD?? :)

mix all worked for me, everything seems really clean and nice separation..had a vintage vibe about it all

Lol, thanks kcearl! My synth is an older Alesis QS6.1 that I haggled some guy on craigslist for. I have a tough time finding patches on it that don't sound cheesy and dated... better than nuthin, but I would love to own me a Little Phatty some day. I drool over most of the synth sounds you get!

Satanic heavy metal? :)
