One Hit Wonder
This is a pretty obscure song from the mid-60's that first introduced me to Maj7 and Min7 chords. At that point in my life I was pretty shocked to find out that not all songs were played with C-Am-F-G (and even with that I was still stuggling to finger an F chord cleanly - hmmmm. . . actually I still am :) )

Anyway, the mix is in its early stages and I already know the guitar needs to be retracked, but any critiques, suggestions on arrangement/instrumentation, etc. are welcome.

The song is Mr. Dyingly Sad

really a very nice mix ...nice work!

jamal:cool:

Bravo!

Another great tune, this definitely has that 60's vibe going on.
Sounds finished to me.

Sounds finished to me too:D Great production, I think you have cracked the spatials with this. I love the distance you have put between the foreground lead singer and the chorus group in the background. And I would say you have got the panning spot on too, good, fat width. Is that panning delay I hear?

Captured the essence of the 60's to a 'T'. I see striped blazers and straw hats;)

Great sound Dach-the bass is big the guitars glisten and the vocals are right out front. Seems like you are using the full sound spectrum(wish I could do that..). The tune is kinda kitschy-I wanted to throw on my smoking jacket and drink a martini or something...Great job!

Wow, great tune dachay2tnr...can't add much that hasnt been said already, other than sounds like a finished product . Enjoyed it much man...David

Good job, Mike.
I liked the guitar. Didn't really hear anything that needed a retake there.

I think you could put just a little more distance between the lead and vocal harmonies. That's really the only thing that sticks out to me.

....that and no horns.;)

Thanks to all for listening and for the thumbs up. This one kinda just fell together. Funny how some songs can take weeks and weeks of tweaks and remixing, while others you kinda just set the volume levels and slap on a reverb. :)

jamal - Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, that is not me singing ('cause I want some too. :) ) FWIW I did the guitars and one of the backing vocal parts.

acidrock - as always, thanks for listening and for the enouraging words. I'm still looking for your first post, though.

Paul - no panning delay. The vocal separation is primarily just from panning and reverb (the lead is a little dryer than the background vox). I also used a stereo-enhancer on the finished wave file (Wave S1), maybe that's what you are hearing.

The tune is kinda kitschy-I wanted to throw on my smoking jacket and drink a martini or something
LOL. That's funny, Strat, and probably true. However, for some reason I've always liked it. Probably because at times I tend to have kitschy taste.

David - thanks for listening. I noticed that you also have a song posted in the forum. I'm gonna try and listen to it. My 28.8 modem, though, limits my degree of patience to just downloading a couple of songs a week.

I'm particularly interested because you used a Martin. I'm guitar shopping myself, and my friend Paul881 is telling me to go for a Taylor as the Martin's are very boomy when recorded. Any thoughts?

Hey, Chuck. We must have cross posted. I was wondering if you would ring in on this, or whether the new little princess had you otherwise occupied. :)

Actually the guitar work is a bit on the sloppy side, but maybe I can get away with it because it's pretty buried in the mix. What's your thoughts on getting more distance in the vox? My concern on this is that in several parts of the song the lead blends togeteher with the background parts. On those parts I want all the vocals to mesh. I guess I could try something with Sonar's automated FX, but the 'verb I'm currently using is a Waves reverb and I like it for the song, but it's not automatable.

Thinking out loud here... since it's on an aux bus, maybe I could work with automating the track sends. Hmmm, something to try tonight.

dach' I`m at work and they dont let me download mp3`s, but I can look at any visual I want, heh heh heh. From the looks of the listens I`ll have to check this out as soon as I get home. I been waiting to hear something you messed with.

Toki

p.s. how the hell do you say your nick?

" duh chay tootin' in her?" :)

That's a great way to do it. I have tried that in PA9, prior to automated effects, and it works.

My thoughts on the vocal balance was pretty much just a volume thing. I haven't listened since yesterday, but there's a low harmony that's a bit strong. I shall listen again when I get home.

Dachy,

Who did the original of that tune? I remember the song, but I was pretty young.

I thought the vocal blend was absolutely perfect.

Twist

Thanks for listening, Twist. The original was done by a band called The Critters. They were from NJ, and I was never completely sure whether their music ever made it beyond local area radio. The only other thing I can recall them doing was a song called Marrying Kind of Love, which I also liked.

I was also "relatively" young at the time, and was probably playing guitar for about a year or so when I learned this song. I probably doubled the number of chords I knew at the time just by learning this song. :)

Sir!!! I tip my hat and bend one knee!!

I haven`t heard that kinda depth, clean, field placement, and transparency in a long time, it melds. I had a hunch it would be so... I couldnt really hear the verb yet it kept the backup behind the lead and a logical distance between the players,... beautiful. Ok I`ll lay off the sugar...

You mentioned yourself about a little more stage distance between the lead and backup by using the 'verb, about 3 or 4 ft seems appropriate for that tune.

t'was a most pleasurable listening and learning experience.

Toki - you honor me with your comments, kind sir. Completely undeserved, and just more proof that even a blind squirrel can find an acorn occasionally. :D Thanks.

You sir, are the king of 60's pop around here:D Great vocals.

:D :D Not sure that is a good thing to be in 2002, but I've always been developmentally challenged. Thanks for listening.

dachay2tnr,

....Excellent...vocals...instruments...mix....

You have captured a classic sound with a great recording!

Dara

damn fine singing dachay! this sounds very professional to me. the mix sounded great. couldn't really find anything to change about it.

I never heard of the Critters. While reading the posts looking for the band name, I was guessing The Association. Kind of has a 'Windy' feel in spots.

The bass was a bit... well.... bassy. Maybe cut some around 275hz? I thought I heard some weirdness in the harmonies early in the song. Not off key - but maybe some words that had some hard "r's" in them (you know - a bit over pronounced)?

Other than that, some of those harmonies just killed. I liked the song too. I imagine Hef in a smoking jacket with a brandy snifter and a pipe... about to get laid again.
