Hey guys! I've had a good idea (during a boring essay i'm doing).

I like the MP3 mixing clinic. It's the best sub-forum going. The people here are cool and you always come away knowing more than you started.

I wanna have a bit of fun, but on a grand scale. I've tried a couple of collabs in the past, some have worked well, some havn't got off the ground. I was thinking it would be cool to record a song - any song, cover or original - that involves as many of the people here as possible. Twenty or thirty maybe.

I'm not a great musician or great at recording, but I get a huge kick out of both. There are people here who can do amazing things with drums, bass, vocals, guitars, pianos, strings, mixing, mastering etc etc etc. I'd love to combine all that in one song, I think it would really epitomize the best things about HR and demonstrate the communal nature of music.

So whos up for it? I don't know how interested you guys will be - if at all. But let me say that personally, I'd view it as something 100% wholeseome; leave any conflicts at the door, be open-minded when it comes to things like interpretation and genre, and don't be overly critical if we do get anything close to a finished performance.

Just trying to kick something off here.

Edit: Possibly going with a medley of three songs from the Last Waltz.

I'd like to request that all instruments be real.

well not ALL, i mean someone can do some cool synths too, if we're gonna make it a huge project with lots of people involved. but yeah, things like drums and guitars and strings and horns should probably be real. and cowbell too.

Yeah, I mainly meant the drums. Synth stuff is okay. Just no MIDI hat-solos or fake drums.

Cool.....what do you guys want for lunch?:D

A full thanksgiving dinner!!! :)

Great to have some high calibre involved early-on.

Greg I know what ya mean and that's fine.

MSH, I've titled this 'The Last Waltz' because one of my greatest memories of seeing that show was the finale of 'I Shall Be Released' where everyone was on stage together. We could do that song or an original, whichever the general concensus is.

I've gotten the ball rolling but I don't know where to go from here - most of you guys would be way better at producing or arranging but I think we need to choose a song first and sketch out some ideas as to who's doing what.

Drums - Greg L/Zed 32? Y
Vocals - Gummblefish?
Backing Vox - More Backing Vox - RayC
Acoustic x 2 - Gummblefish? TelePaul?
Electric x 2 - slidey Y
Mandolin - Anfontan (I'm volunteering him!!!) Y
Bass - mshilarious lead bass Y
Synths -
Keys -
Strings -
Wind -
Percussion -
Mixing X 2
''Mastering'' -
Lapsteel - TelePaul?

Okay with my basic math ability there's room there for 17/18 contributors but I would like to double that. I think it'd be cool to split bass duties for say verse and chorus, give two people a guitar solo, give two rhythm players a guitar part etc etc. I think the focus should be on producing something fun that gets alot of people involved rather than focus on something that sounds musically perfect (a nice combo of the two would be preferable though!)

Yeah, I'm definitely down for bass so long as it's not funk style, then you'd need somebody that can play that like lbanks or QQ, or probably even ez.

I can also do bad backing vocals, if you want really strange harmony parts I like to do that. I also have an unnecessarily high falsetto, if you want a Stryper or Britpop sound. The quality is still low though :o I have a fairly good Neil Young impression. I can nail "Helpless", if you want to recreate "Last Waltz" in its entirety. I can also do Joni Mitchell badly if required :D

I am fair to average to occasionally useful at writing lyrics. You wouldn't want to use my chord progressions though.

I also have an assortment of odd percussion instruments and a few winds.

I don't mind doing a final spit-n-polish, but I am kinda allergic to mixing.

So, what are we doing?

Why don't we start with "Last Waltz" as a framework? Everybody pick a song to "sponsor", and coordinate getting tracks and mixing that song. Then we stick it all together at the end?

Hmm that's an interesting idea - I'm just worried it might be a bit ambitious, and I don't know if everyone contributing will know of the last waltz.

We could try a Last Waltz Medley - Helpless, I Shall Be Released, the Weight? Run them into each other?

See, now you have me thinking which is better - one song which involves many people or many songs that involve few people. I think maybe we should gauge interest and then decide?

Yeah, I just had a look at the track list, it was a lot longer than I remembered :o

That sounds reasonable, but how can we leave out Neil Diamond? Although I voted for replacing whatever not too memorable song he played with "Heartlight" :D

I don't even know what "Last Waltz" is.

I was thinking we could do a Bon Jovi tune or something. :p
