I thought i would post a little rant for people here. i have seen so many "is this ok for a good demo" or whatever questions posted around here. The key to a good demo is nt if its recorded on a DAW, standalone unit, ADAT, reel to reel or casette. its how you go about recording it. I have gotten gigs at clubs where international touring acts play with my old yamaha MT50 4 track casette player. yea i took a long ass time with mic placement but it worked. Any of the current things out there will get youa good demo, not release worthy cd maybe.. but demo no problem. your main obstacles arent FXs, compression, etc. or if you can only record drums stereo. Its your pre amps, your mic position(and mic to a certain extent, you can sound amazing with 3 SM57s and SM58), and your playing/singing. and also, i didnt have a single resource for recording until i found this site dec 99. ive been playing with recording since 96 and what i did back then was pretty decent given the equipment. bottom line... if you have to ask.. TRY IT!
