I just bought the Hives CD "Veni Vedi Vicious" yesterday and have a question about the Hives. Do they write their own songs? In the CD Booklet, it says "All Songs by Randy Fitzsimmons" who is not one of the band members, I believe. Can anybody back this up?

I read in Guitar World that Randy is the guitar player. They just credit him by a different name.

its like Flea from R.H.C.P (HEy that rhymed!) he gets credited to micheal balzary.

the songs are original, but the album is OLDDDDD

1999 - or so in Sweden. It was sat on for 3 years until they got signed to a major over here. Their indie label has actually released a greatest hits album with that and another record they did.

They've gotta be SO sick of playing that hit song, but it is real kewl.

I know this is kind of off topic, but I think it's so refreshing to see someone writing their own songs, playing their own songs, and performing their own songs these days, and actually making money doing it. I've been getting more and more sick of all these pop groups using other people's songs, then acting like it's a revalation when they write their own songs. I was watching MTV, which I can rarely stomach anymore, and in a news brief they starting going off on how Justin Timberlake "contributed to a few tracks" on his solo record. And they acted like no one had ever done that before... isn't that the way it's supposed to be? I don't know maybe I'm just bitter because I was turned down for "Making the Band".

indeed. The Beatles shifted the paradigm by writing their own material. In the backlash of the Nirvana early nineties thing we're still in the middle of, record companies turned back the clock to the 1950's to take away artistic freedom from the artists. They write the songs, they pick out the artists' clothes, they control their lives. I'm not saying the Hives are their own keepers by any stretch, but writing your own music is a good start.

I also don't believe musicians should be dancing while they perform. Save the dancing for broadway or the disco. If you need to dance to make your song entertaining, you need to write a more interesting song.

Amen to that! If you want to dance... (now this is a novel concept) become a dancer! If you want to be a musician, then write, play, and perform your OWN music

Well, my grandpa used to say that the more lights bombs and lasers, the less musical talent was needed.

Justin Timberflake is so untalented that Mtv has no choice but to make it sound like a revelation that he wrote his own song.
He's a dancer, not a musician. They're entertainers, not musicians. They don't write their own songs, they just dance and target 11 year old girls in the tradition of new Kids On The Block and Milli Vanilli were over 14 years ago! The kids listening to N'Synce were concieved on Milli Vanilli and New Kids On The Block. It's not where you go to appreciate great musicianship.
I can't appreciate anything about it, and if that's what state of the art recording sounds like, you can keep it cuz it sounds like S***

But hey, when I was 13, I was surrounded by a lot of crappy 80's music, but through it all I still searcghed out GOOD music.
Like Bono of U2 said last year, "We were voted best band of the 80's. But being voted best band of a decade of shit music is nothing to be proud of."

Can we all remember to forget bands like WHAM!, Arcadia, Thompson Twins, Mike and The Mechanics, Wang Chung etc etc....thank god we had RATT, Twisted Sister or Metallica.

My point is, a rock revival is right around the corner.
Everythign goes in cycles, and the dancers are fading, and the Marshalls are warming up.

Get Ready for the Final Knockdown ROund.

I sure hope rock is going to revive. Bands like The Hives, The Vines, The White Stripes, and The Strokes are sure helping it. Also, speaking of rock, Nirvana's final song ever recorded has just leaked to the internet. I strongly suggest you download it using Kazaa or other file-sharing programs. It's called You Know You're Right.

I tell you what though... all the bands you listed pretty much sound the same... except maybe The Vines... I'd much rather support originality like Saves the Day, The Get Up Kids, and Incubus. But... at least there's rock coming out now, maybe the masses will once again think it's cool to rock and those of us who don't have 20 bucks to drop on every CD we want can hear some good new music coming out of that acient relic called the radio.

Yeah Stump, I also agree with you. Incubus happens to be my favorite band. I'm goin to their concert on October 8th. Can't wait!!

Yeah I'm still listening to "The Warmth" and every time I listen I find something new that just makes me go "wow". Plus, anyone who is a guitar player would do good to look at some of Mike Einzinger's guitar parts.... the chords he uses and how he puts them together are just amazing... speaking of that, I've been really getting back into STP too, Robert DeLeo is an absolutely amazing musician.

I haven't heard anything on the radio that is even close to decent. I agree with what someone up there said about driving music to a fifties type of submission. It's all styrofoam and cotton candy to me. What ever happened to kids listening to backward messages then killing themselves, Now, that's Rock and Roll!

the

How come all of the "new wave" of rock bands have 'the' in the front of their names.I supose I'm very cinical but it sounds like bandwagon jumping to me.They also have a similar sound /image.Now don't get me wrong more power to 'em but I just think theres a bit to much "whats cool now and we'll make a band like that" going on.
On the subject of dancing I reckon that if you got the moves use 'em but not at the expense of the tunes, heck I love to dance and as most of my songs have all of one chord I've gots to dance.
