The end of my Bx5's?

I lent my brother my M-Audio Bx5's for a party. He played music for 6 hours basically at full pump the whole time. Since I got them home I have noticed a real dullness in the high frequencies and generally they have nowhere near the clarity they used to have. They sound lifeless.

Can this sort of continual 6hr use on full volume do this kind of damage?

I don't want to say anything to my brother because, hey, I lent them to him and what am I gonna do anyway, charge him for new ones?

Anyway...are they cactus, is there anything I can do to restore their original clarity?

If its clarity (highs) it might just be the tweeter contact m-audio for replacement parts.. They should only be like 10 bucks..

If its the woofer it might be a little more but cheaper then new.

M-Audio shipped me a pair of replacement tweeters for my BX5's for less than $30 (I think they were $12.50, each, plus shipping). Verify that it's the tweeters and call them up. Probably will cost a little more to ship to Australia.

I'm pretty sure it's the tweeters...I'll go and ask my local music shop and see if they can get replacement parts in.

thanks

yeah, they're probably shot. i guess that begs the question, why did you let him use them for a party? they're monitors, not PA speakers. seems to me that blasting them at full tilt for hours on end is irresponsible at best.

cheers,

Yeah, I just didn't realise that it would be so detrimental. In the back of my mind I did, but I must have said ah stuff it, let him use them. I took a chance and it didn't go too well.

just keep the old ones in case you loan them out again, do the swap. ;)

thats sound really good on the price, i'm impressed the replacements are that cheap.

Hey scrubs how did you verify it was your tweeters? Did you install the new ones yourself? What sort of thing made your tweeters go?

Mine didn't actually blow. The right tweeter developed this strange buzzing sound, which I think was just sympathetic vibration of the dome against something inside the speaker. If I touched the dome lightly with my finger, it would stop. Unfortunately, it's hard to mix with your finger on the speaker all the time. ;)

So, I submitted an online tech support request and the guy suggested that since the speakers were out of warranty, it would be much cheaper to just buy replacement tweeters and install them myself, rather than send them back for repair. I just installed them with crimp-on quick connects, rather than solder, in case I need to change them again. It was a fairly simple operation.

Oh right...not quite the same problem as me. Thanks

Just got them back from the repair shop....the bliss! Damn it's good to have them back!

:)
