What do you guys think of the 1212M? I just ordered it. I'm mainly going to be just plugging my reference monitors into it, since I have a POD X3 for amp emulation, and I'll use that as my recording interface. I've tried using the X3 as a default sound card, but it pops and clicks no matter what I do, so I'm hoping using a dedicated sound card will alleviate the issue.

I'm a little intimidated by the PatchMix deal though. Not sure how to set that up simply so I can just have sound going to the outputs and then to my speakers.

The patchmix was a bit wierd but once you get your own application setup, you probably won't have to touch it other than volume and mute.

I've had mine a while and its really pretty standard once you use it. A software "mixing board" really, and the patch thing is really just like a cable-patch bay, but a software version.
If you want the sound from the mixer to go to a different output you just click a button instead of moving a physical cable.
And there's preset's which will have something that works for you.

No if you want to really master the software, and use it like Hendrix would a Strat....I can't help. I rarely if ever even use the Patchmix, I run all my volumes from my recording software.

Patchmix actually doesn't even have to be adjusted for anything, once you select your setup.. imo.

Do they give instructions in the manual about how to set it up to do something simple? Like in my case, simply to hook up your speakers to, so when you play a CD, you'll hear it? Same thing with the Windows System Sounds?

The Emu xxxxM series have surprisingly good convertors.MHO.

IIFC, there are several default patchmix settings files, one of which I'm sure will provide exactly what you're looking for.

I wouldn't have any reservations tracking with it either.

yes the defaults is all I ever needed. and then it was only one of the defaults I ever used.
The only thing I ever touch is the Master fader and Mute button, and then thats rare.

I work with Kristal Audio Engine recording software (legally free). It has its own volume and mute functions...and all the rest. probably like most software Mulitrackers.

good SOS article.

interesting, I even get more out of it now.

oh yeah, now I remember the importance of finding the New Session...that was a big step in it working like a basic multi-tracker with the monitors and patches all ..er...like a default.

I have an EMU1212M. And also an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96. Sonically, there is no difference (from what I hear).

The PatchMix is kind of hard to get used to. The M-Audio one is easier.

But the EMU has 1/4" inputs and outputs which makes connecting it so easy. I have no idea why M-Audio put RCA jacks on the 24/96.

The EMU1212 is a great recording card.

Yes, the 1212m is a great card with great converters, and lots of connectivity options. I really like mine.

He nailed it. That patchmix software sucks in terms of ease of use. The good news is that the EMU support team is killer and once you have it set up like you like it, it runs like a champ. I think I have had mine for over 2 years now without a single crash or lock up. I use mine for monitoring and mixing and also for inputs for simple overdubs.

It's worth the extra $$$$$ to get the 1616M-PCI. I had the 1212 for 2 months, then sold it on ebay and switched up to the 1616M.

Patchmix is not intuitive. But it doesn't suck, it is the best thing to happen to home recording since smoked ham.

Patchmix will take over the handling of sound on your computer, but that's ok. I called EMU tech 3 or 4 times in one week when I got my 1616, and I made them explain Patchmix AND ASIO. If you dont understand ASIO then Patchmix will sit idle and untested like a finely tuned racer in a McDonalds parking lot.

Learn ASIO, Learn Patchmix, Use Pathcmix to it's full capability, and your home recording efforts will take a sudden turn for the hugely better. Just the built in fx alone (which run on the sound card chip, NOT on your computer's cpu) are worth the effort. Learn how it can utilize all the sends and returns and aux loops. It is a software mixer with built in fx that runs on the same converters that Pro Tools uses.

You wont be disappointed either way, but you'll be missing so much if you just "get it working" and then leave it alone.
