O.K if yall didnt know already Im trying take more of a listening approach in my beat making development. Well anyways...you know how they say oh that beat sounds like something pharell would do or scott storch would do... Well that is kinda off from what im trying to ask lol. How do know what ur naturally developed style is and what may be the signs that you may already have it but u just dont know. Yall gotta help me out Im Noddy for ones sake :D

You know how everyone has their own signature? Well, I think that is the unique thing about music and your ability to express it. There are things that only we have individually and we need to reach deep down within ourselves and pull it out. That is what seperates all of us.......That is why it is not good to spend too much time emulating others, but rather spend most of your time trying to find you! We gotta start somewhere!!!
You'll know you have found it when you're not the only one impressed with your music........(And I don't mean friends and family, they have a tendancy to not tell the "Whole" truth)

i dont know but for me... its just my personal preference of what i think sounds good... when i go beat diggin or im chopping up my samples... there are just certain sounds that i am drawn to... for some odd reason or another... sometimes i cant explain it...

but then when i put it together its sorta weird.. magically it all fits... my big mistake recently was listening to dilla since the shining came out... cause im just like damn...

and its been distracting because now im hearing what dilla sounds like and of course to me, thats my definition of perfection are his beats.. so i try and go thru sounding like him..

i need some time to step away from that and just do me again.

Wow yall...lemme hear one of those dilla joints Mos Def plz

Most Def!

Not taking anything from Dill (RIP) Don't waste time emulating, Do You!

but what if I do me and it sounds good to me but other people dont like it...I mean i dont make music for myself right?

nah wasnt tryin to be him... more like being inspired from him... but i gotta get back to being inspired randomly.. thats how i usually come up with dope shit.. is just outta the air like.. something clicks and im like oh shit this is gonna be dope.

I'm just commenting on what you said! Not trying to clown ya!
I know what you mean though, it is good to be inspired by someone as great as Dilla......... I've gotten in modes that I sounded like someone else and I was like "Hold up"!!!!!!

If you have good quality music, that is important. Whether people feel it or not, it's a matter of preference. But the honesty you have within, as far as who you are, will come out in your music. Be your worst critic and shoot for perfection.
This is just my approach.......I am not a rapper or notorious beatmaker, I make beats just to write songs and get new ideas. People have felt alot of my music, but I still feel I can do waaay better. I am never satisfied... All of the greats were perfectionist and it comes easy to some....But just bring out the best in you and experiment, experiment, experiment....People in this forum tends to be rather honest. I say keep posting and learn from the knowledgeable ones in here... (That wouldn't be me, but I'm one Hell of a motivational speaker)

I appreciate it Trump. Ur definately correct about the people on this board too...
