I recorded these tonight. My studio is in my basement and I moved my guitar amp back into my 12'x12' finsihed studio room because the winter is on and the heater is running alot. It has been outside my studio door in the main, unfinished basement. But the noise that the hot water heater, washer/dryer, are making are bleeding worse into the mic than if I brought it in the studio. this makes all instruments within a few feet of my vocal/harp mic. So, having a semi hollowbody guitar, guitar amp, snare drum, bass drum, ride cymbal, voice, and harp, all going at once leads to an interesting puzzle in mic placements for sure! Walter

Sounds good Walter, is this based on a true story?

On another note, what do you record with? I'm assuming digital, seeing as how fast you record these and post em. What software/interface do you use. You get real good sounds and very clean recordings. Ever thought of going analog? Seems it would suit your style very well.

hi ksounds: Thanks for listening and the compliment. Most of my songs are based on my life and things I see and hear. Also my imagination creates alot of songs and I channel spirits of the past from the universe. I have always been somewhat clarvoiant. It use to scare me. I thought it was the devil, but have learned to realize if I tap the positive side of it, it is gift from god. I just close my eyes and drift and these songs unfold. I was raised on tape, but never from an engineer perspective, only a musicians. It was all too overwhelming when I would go in a studio. Money stress, and usually a one session per lp set up, coupled with my lack of technical skills to explain the sound I wanted, led to exciting, but fatiguing experinces. I did adat and dat when I started teaching myself to record about 4 years ago, but didn't like the sound as much as the digital sound I was getting. I sold off those machines but am thinking of buying another one and seeing if what happens with what I know now. A good friend of mine is a great engineer that does tape and digital. He told me the maintainance on tape players is pretty high, tape is expensive, plus getting a good one costs a chunk of change. I am not at all electronically inclined, so the digital is the ticket. He is looking into a plug in for me that will simulate tape.

I use samplitude software and a delta 1010 soundcard. This one allows me to run up to 8 mics at a time. I use 4 most of the time. I also use the universal audio plug ins - mainly the LA2A compressor, EMT Plate reverb, Neve 1081 eq, and UA precision limiter. I have set up templates for the various set ups I use and it usually takes less than a few minutes to master a song. Often the time it takes to load a song on soundclick takes longer than it does to master it. My goal is to capture the way I sound in a live situation with a good sound system/room sound. Walter

It's nice that you can just walk in, sit down and only think about the creative side. It shows in your songs!!

peace.

Hi Chili: thanks for listening! It is very special to have the set up I have. I have dreamed of such a place for about 40 years........ I see you live in Austin. I lived there from 85-96. It was cooking back then. Do you remember the black cat lounge? I played there more than anyone. Paul dug what I did and that club was by far my best gig to date. Tell everyone in austin hi for me especially- - will/charlie sexton, speedy sparks, rich minus, mike vernon, dave sanger, david holt.

Hey Walter, Yeah, Austin is not as active as before. I was previously living here from 92 - 97, so I probably caught your act at the black cat. Been there many times.

I run into Will Sexton every so often through a songwriter's group. Next time, I'll mention your name.

peace.

Hi Chili: I have heard through the grapevine the town is a mere shell of what it was back then. I always wore custom suits, lame, sequence, etc, and drove a green/silver 63 cadillac that was featured in dwight yokum's guitar cadillac video. Please say hi to Will for me. He was just a teen when I met him. Will and the kill was taking off during that era. I had a lot of great times with Will. He and Charlie came up to me when I was playing the Black Cat for the first time. Luther Tucker, who we stayed with when we hit austin, told us of the club. Paul listened to one of my records and booked me 5 nights a week on the spot. I did a lot of gigs with Evan Johns, teddy roddey, chris duarte, timbuck 3, jeff hugh, ricky broussard, david grissom, terry lecoz, too. I heard he was moving back to austin. If you see him say hi. I hope to get down there for a visit. I am going to email you my email and phone number. If you don't mind, could you pass it on to the folks I mentioned if you run into them? I have totally lost touch with all of them. Heck it has been almost 15 years since we left. Man does time fly! Walter
