Ok. I am also venturing into the world of home recording. For now, and for a while, I only plan on recording bass, guitar, and voice. No drums.. that would require me to do a lot of construction work at the house. =D

I have searched around on the forums and have read posts from 2003 to 2007.. and get mixed views.

First. A preamp. I have figured out that I will NEED one of these.

The AudioBuddy was recomended quite a bit, and it seems to suit my needs.

After a preamp.. I need to get rid of my Soundblaster soundcard. I have heard SO MANY different recomendations on soundcards.

The Delta 44 seems like a nice soundcard that would suit me. I will let you guys decide on if I should buy a different one or not... I am sort of just getting this gear checked one good time before I go off and buy it.

PCI cards are fine for me. Just clearing that up.

I plan on buying a SM-58 and a SM-57 for the mics. I will keep buying this stuff throughout this spring and summer till I have it all. Just working my way through school and life.

I can't think of anything else I will need for my needs. I am just recording for my own personal enjoyment. Create my own CDs for myself and maybe a friend or what not. I would like the quality to be decent though, I am just not going to spend a ton of money for this, since it will serve no professional purpose.

ANYONE please just let me know my mistakes and if you want to add some recomendations, then please do so.

I use Cakewalk Music Creator Pro for my software. It works fine.. I am getting decent at it from just using my cheapy soundcard. I will eventually move on to something more advanced and better.

Thanks!

Ryan

Ok.... So I pretty much figured out on NOT buying the AudioBuddy preamp thing. I will be going with the DMP3. Misewell work and extra night or two and buy something a lot better than go with the AudioBuddy.

I am looking for a good mic to record acoustic guitar... Any suggestions?

Good choice. I personally think the DMP3 is cleaner/better, has full 48v phantom power for mics, and is only about $50 or so more.

What's your budget?

You can get excellent results from MSH mics (made by a guy on these forums). They're only about $20 a piece. There are sound clips at his site:

http://www.naiant.com/

As well as info about each mic. And there's also this thread about them if you want to hear it on acoustic (classical guitar):

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=208086&highlight=msh-1a

There are other options too for acoustic guitar but I don't know what your budget is and those mics are great.

What is your budget on mics, if you are recording a voice or an acoustic instrument you may want to check out this thread. A large diaphragm condensor may be a better choice.

I don't really have a budget... its more of me not wanting to just go out and spend $150 on a mic unless it is really worth it. It would be hard for me to spend that much on just a mic, unless I had intentions of recording for other people, which I don't. =D

I am going to check those mics out..

Danny83, who posts on this forum has about the same quality of vocals/guitar that I want. Only difference is that I would be micing my amp for the electric guitar. You can hear his stuff here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=624183

Replying to the post above this one. I was planning on using an SM-58 for vocals.. and a different mic specifically for the acoustic, because I heard that those were exactly the right type of mics for acoustic guitars.

I checked out those MSH mics.. interested very much so. The quality sounds good enough for me. =D I will probably buy 2 of those. How do they work for vocals?

My only recomendation is not using the sm58 for vocals if you havent purchased one. Look for threads about vocal mic's under a 100 bucks or basically the same price as a SM58. If the music you want to record is anything like the link you posted you will probably be happier with a large diaphragm condensor.

If you have a Guitar Center or Sam Ash by you try out different mics in your price range, there is no perfect mic for any instruments. Anything you read here is just an opinion, what some love others hate. There is no right or wrong to what you will choose, try them out see which one you like best. :)

I checked out those MSH mics.. I wish I could hear more sound clips though. I am very interested in buying 2 of those. Anywhere I could get more sound clips?

Did you check out all the clips on the naiant website? There's more on this site too I think. I personally don't think you'll do a lot better for ~$150. You could buy 2 that will leave you about $100 to spend on something else (Vocal mic?)

I listened to danny83's song. You could get that kind of sound with an MSH easily (on the guitar). Probably not so easily on vocals.

What matters most on acoustic is that the actual acoustic guitar sounds good. If you think your guitar is capable of producing a sound like his then the MSH will do the job fine.

It also might be a good idea to ask him how he records his stuff and what kind of gear he uses. ;)

Ah gotcha! I havn't bought anything yet. I might go out to Guitar Center and try some out... just dunno if I could hear myself in that place. lol

Yeah I found those clips after I posted.. they sound great. I am talking to that dude right now about it. I think my guitar sounds great. =D

150 for the 44 plus 150 for the dmp3. For $300 the Focusrite SaffireLE has better sound and better preamps built in. It also gives you a package with some good tools and plugins. Much better deal for the money in my opinion.

What about the Tascam US-122?? I've thought about it as well. I found one for under $100. That seems like a decent deal to me.. but if the Saffire LE would blow it out of the water (seeing a big difference in quality), then I might save up for one.

Never ever buy a Tascam US122. That has to be the most problematic unit ever made.

Thanks. Ok.. So What do you guys say? Would it be best to go with the Delta 44 and DMP3 or the single SaffireLE? Any suggestions are welcome.

I have also heard good things about the PreSonus Firebox.

All I am doing is recording vocals, acoustic guitar, and micing an amp.

I don't think I would be doing all 3 at one time, although there could be a chance that I would be. In the case, I could possible need more than 2 inputs in the future, but I highly doubt that, as I can always record the lead guitar seperately.

I am just shooting for a nice clean sound.. If I can get a nice clean sound with the US-122, then I would definately go for that.. but I don't want something that messes up constantly. I like the idea of the SaffireLE because of the reverb, compression, etc that it comes with. How would their reverb compare with the reverb plugins on Cakewalk or one I download though?

--- update ---

Ok.. I have read MANY good reviews on the Saffire LE and have decided to go with it. I will start saving up some money and I hope to be able to buy it within a couple of weeks. =D Happy me!
