The D2424 harddrive format

I will soon purchase the D2424 recorder but I have one concern. Here is what I would like to do but I don't know if it is possible. I would like to record live bands in multi track onto the D2424 and then physically pull the hard drive out and plug it into my PC/DAW for faster and simpler edits and mixdown. I know it has lightpipe I/O's just for that but when I have 20 - 40 gigs worth of wav files, this would surely be faster. Will my Windows xp machine have a problem reading the old FAT16 drive format?

I plan to use a new hard drive for each band/session and then stick it on a shelf for backup.

I have a D824 and the HD has it's own protacol. It wouln't work dirctly in a computer. Unless the D2424 is different than the D824, but I think the difference is in track number. ADAT should work fine for transfering.

I just discovered that using a D2424 formatted harddrive on a PC wont work!
Windows wont recognize the format of the drive, it asked me if i wanted to format it! LOL

So anyone have had any clue if there is a program to enable windows to read fostex systemdrives???

Hello Juan,

You will need a computer interfaced card(RME makes good cards) that can accept the output from your D2424. Light pipe or TDIF will transfer the most tracks at once. Then, you need a software to receive the files into your computer. You could make some rough adjustments of vol etc and then send all the tracks to an external HD for safe storage. I store important stuff to a MDHD320-T Iomega hard drive including pictures. When computers crash, they are safe.

One odd thing about my D824 HD recorder is that difficult instruments to record like violin have a much smoother natural sound when recorded into the 824 than if I record directly to my PC. I use Samplitude Pro and a quality PC.

That seems like a pain. You can do it with a SCSI interface instead.

I like the stand alones myself. I'd like to go to the 24 track, but I'm in good shape with the older 16, and 8 tracks synced together.

Have you ever done a recording quality comparison of a stand alone to a PC recording rig? I would like to get a AES system some day.

Not yet. I finaly ordered a real sound card with a MIDI interface, so I can sync everything. I'll do something by next week.

Not much help to you, but it looks like Linux can do it if you install the appropriate FUSE driver. If you have access to a linux box and you know what you're doing you might be able to extract the data that way and transfer it to the Windows machine.
