I had an old strat copy I did something like that to, but instead on using push/pull pots, I replaced the stock 5 way switch with with 3 little DPDT (double pole/double throw) switches. One for each pickup.

That guitar made some funky sounds. I used to do all my strange wiring ideas to it. I even put in a mercurey switch so that when I set the guitar on the stand it would turn itself off.

mini switches are OK, but this modification doesn't alter the original look, much better.
