Deceptively simple. Even old Beethoven, himself, gave up trying to play them.

(c) sounded awful (so why should L v. B even bother, considering he had a set of 32 of his own, most of which are pretty darned good...)
(d) perhaps he couldn't hear, and missed the whole point of them anyway...
