Heya guys and gals....I picked up a Roland M SE-1 String Ensemble module a while ago which I realy dig for the price (payed a couple of hundred Australian)...Here's the question...In the manuel it says there's a tympany patch, but you think I could find it?....I've been using the unit for about 2 years, but still neither me nor anyone else that's used it can find the tymps....Anyone know where they're hiding and how to release these secretive animals?....Cheers!!!

My friend you have a symphonique beast in your possession. I've had the SE-1 for about 2 years now and I use it on almost all of my tracks and is probably my favorite piece of gear. Better yet I only paid $150 American for it.

In reference to your question, the only timpani patch I can recall is only accessible in the rhythm sets. In Performance mode the rhythm part is listed as P-8, but is on MIDI channel 10. Here there are 3 or 4 drums kits (d1 - d4) and all of them contain a timpani patch (I think they spread it across 2 octaves) as well as a few other orchestral percussion patches.

Hope this helps and any problems or questions let me know. I'm very familiar with this unit and all the M series line for that matter (I also have the VS-1, the BD-1 and the GS64).

Stay...Cheers man....Yep, I love this unit and wouldn't part with it....Ok, just because I'm a plank, what steps are there to access the percussion?...Also, have you messed around with any of the other units in this series?...Are they as good as this one?....Thanks again man!

Woops...

...That should've been Stray, but you probably knew that :)

Memriloc,

I have the PDF manual for the SE-1 on my studio PC, I'll upload it here for you tomorrow.

To access the rhythm section, you have to be in Performance mode. Then just move through the parts (P1 - P8). P8 is the rhythm part and contains the timpani patches.

Roland M Series Modules included:

MSE-1 - String Ensemble
MVS-1 - Vintage Synth
MOC-1 - Orhestra
MDC-1 - Dance
MGS64 - General MIDI Module

Then they released the MBD-1 - Bass and Drum about 1 or 2 years later.

I have all of these units except the DC-1 and OC-1, I'm on the hunt for those 2. All of the units are excellent deals and all the sounds are of excellent quality. Definitely worth it. You can find these units for $150 used.

Good luck and I'll let you know when I upload the manual.

Ahh...good man...thanks again stray!!!....Now for another anoying bumbleing question...In the normal patch mode (I think) there's 128 patches right?....I can access them....Like the percussion set, is there any other 'hidden' patches?....I tell ya, if you reckon the others in the series are as good, I'm on the lookout for them now!!!...What's the 'general midi modual'?...and do any of these modules have a good piano sound?...I'm after a low priced GOOD module that has varying sounds from grand to upright...Cheers again Stray!

Memriloc,

Get into Performance mode and you'll see all the available patches. I've never used the unit in Patch mode so I can't tell what's missing. To get into Performance mode hold down the Part button while powering up. Then you can select the part (P1 - P8) by pressing the Part Buttons (left and right arrows).

The General MIDI Module is pretty much like a Roland Sound Canvas. As a matter of fact, I think it is the same sound set as the SC880. It has more patches than any of the other models, but is definitely a jack of all trades master of none. It's a lot more confusing to operate than any of the others. The way you select banks is very strange. This is only model with piano presets and they are just okay.

I just picked up the Kurzweil ME-1 MicroEnsemble, same sound set as the PC2R. This unit has all sorts of sounds but alots 2.5 banks for pianos. I must say these are the best pianos I've ever heard from a module. Pretty much covers all the bases from classical, to rock, to house even. The unit goes for $400 new, but I was able to scoop it up for a measely $120!!!

Kuzweil has the MicroPiano as well that gets rave reviews. You can pick one of these up for about $150 used. I was planning on getting one but now that I found the ME-1 it isn't really needed.

Hope this helps.

ooh resurrecting an old thread. i was interested to read poepl here talking about the Roland M-OC-1 orchestral module (or similar) as this is apparently the bit of kit used in Dave Fridmann's studio on stuff like the Flaming Lips. I love that sound and am wanting to try an recreate it roughly, perferably in a Cubase VSTi environmenmt. Are these Roland sound modules sample based or synth based? Does anyone know how to get a roughly equivalent sound from VST instruments?
