I'm looking for a mic that would suit a variety of voices.
I'd like it to be a mic more suited for rap/r&b, no screaming involved, so Im looking to get that polished rap sound.
If that helps you to understand any better.

It'll be the centerpiece mic of the studio..so it needs to be a mic that works as I said, with a variety of voices.

I have about $800 to spend..any suggestions?

Audio Technical tube 4060, Shure KSM44.

Any mic will work on that stuff. A nice pre amp and compression and eq and delay and reverb make the sweetness appear

Are you saying that the preamp is more important than the mic?

I think Ronan's suggestions are very good.

If it's going to be the "centerpiece" mic in a rap/r&b studio - get a TLM 103. Works great. It's a Neumann in your studio. Good for your business.

here here. Couldn't agree more on the TLM103. Mine has been a God-send. I love it! It is built around the same capsule as the U87, which seems to be the most requested mic for rap/R&B, so you really can't go wrong. (But be aware that doesn't mean it sounds just like a U87... but it's fantastic in its own right).
You'll find a good one second hand for that price. Then get the suspension mount for the MXL990. Fits the TLM103 beautifully for a fraction of the cost of a genuine unit.

See if you can get your hands on a couple mics and do a shoot out with one or two of your fave clients. The Neuman TLM is a solid mic, but can be kinda vanilla and does not really have the presence that is often associated with R&B and slicker rap stuff.

A microtech-geffell UM70S actually has a Neuman M7 capsule, same as the vintage Neumans.

We decided to go with the following.

Nueman TLM

And to get these, to add to the mic locker.
Cad M9
Shure KSM 44
Rode K2

The Neuman is a great choice.

You also mentioned the K2. I have one, and use on rap and R&B all the time, and it sounds awesome.

Yes, the TLM103 is very vanilla sounding, but it's a very nice vanilla.
IMHO that makes it perfect for matching with different preamps to get the sound you want.

Thanks for postin for me AON, I wasn't able to get on for a while, due to a crashed comp.

But like he said, that's what we decided to go with, thanks for all the help.

AllOrNothinEnt, pm me on Yahoo please, I need to ask you a question.
