The TG-55 is a pure and simple sample playback synth with some pretty crappy sounding filters. It was brought out in the early 90's as a split-off of the sample playback capabilities of the TG-77. Dunno much about the TG-500 except that it was the successor to the TG-55.
I've seen TG-77's for dirt cheap (under $300) on ebay, and for that kind of money that's one hell of a synth. It has a nice big screen for easy editing and if you're any kind of a tweeker at all you don't even have to use the built in samples to get big, great sounds out of it. Layering two or more AFM (advanced FM) patches is the key --- I'd strongly recommend you give ebay a look before you decide to spend money on either lesser synth.

Heres the Deal.....I had both, just traded them in yesterday at Rogue Music (www.roguemusic.com) I love them both. The tg-77 is a spin off of the sy-77 (similar to the sy-99 used in the Boys 2 Men "end of the road" album) which is great for Electric pianos and Pianos, imo nothing much more. The tg-500 is the rack version of the sy-85 which is also great for pianos, and elec. pianos. However its strengths are also good for brass and synths. sy and the tg ep's layeres with roland ep's sound freaking great in a Bryan McKnight/babyface/toni braxton type mix. However, I needed a roland xp-30 for church, so I traded in my tg-500, sy-77, planet phatt for it.

what a small world,.amazing,.i bought that tg 500,.off rogue the first day it was posted,..i could not believe,.that i came across this site,.and actually found the previous owner,.i had put in the search engine tg 500,.and studio,.and it came to this link,. wow,.yours had two stars,.on each side of the unit ?.i saw nothin but great reviews for this unit,.i mean all over,.and the sounds are very ,very nice and warm,.i also saw that xp 30, u bought,.a question for u,.annpilot,.how much did you get for it,.at rogue? thanks,and thanksfor letting her go.
