I've been using this card for about 7 months or so now and I run into this problem every time.

If I am using a program that uses the ASIO drivers (for instance, the Native Instrument Guitar Rig standalone application) and I try to play something in Winamp, Windows media player, Adobe Audition, or anything that uses a non-ASIO driver, I get a direct sound error, or a it the music will just stop and the program will freeze.

For instance, I am listening to a song in winamp, I procede to open up Guitar Rig, or Tracktion, which both are using ASIO, my winamp will stop playing, and just freeze up.

I have been using my buddies M-Audio 2496 card at his studio, and he does not have this problem. One thing that I can do over there, that I cant do at my home, is open guitar rig and Audition at the same time. I can also play along with songs playing in WMP over there while running Guitar Rig or Amplitube.

It's starting to piss me off now, because I am finding more times than not I need this functionality. I've searched high and low and RTFM many times with no answer.

There is the specs for the card.

I have this card too, and I know what your talking about. It has to do with 2 things:

When switching from one program to another, the first program has to release the driver, be it ASIO or DirectX or whatever. If it doesn't, the other program will either simply give on sound, or it will give an error, or in the case of WinAmp, it will freeze or crash.

There seems to also be a problem with WinAmp not beeing able to handle the driver beeing "taken away" from him. Example: I have WinAmp running, on DirectX drivers. I start Cubase. Cubase loads the ASIO drivers and because the card cannot run ASIO and DirectX at the same time, the drivers used by winamp are shut off, or whatever you wanna call it. WinAmp doesn't crash, but is unable to play anything anymore from that point on, even when closing Cubase. I don't think this is solveable. However, in most applications that use ASIO, you should be able to set the "release ASIO driver in background" option.

Thanx! Nice to know its not a isolated problem. Its about enough for me to grab a M-audio card.

Good idea. And the M-Audio cards are now M-Powered compatable aswell, which means should you ever want to use pro tools, you can use the same gear.
