temp files

Dear Abbie,

What's the story on temp files? I'm still trying to find why my computer is constantly losing disk space, and I came across Windows Temp files tonight, and they're taking up a huge chunk of my disk - about half. Are temp files necessary? Are some necessary and some not?

I'm using Cool Edit Pro, and I noticed that some of the temp files are Cool Edit files, and some of them are very big files. Is Cool Edit creating huge temp files that don't get dealt with by emptying the recycle bin?

I tried running 'Disk Cleanup', and the net result seemed to be a 4 MB reduction of disk space! (insert rude sound of disgust and exasperation here)

Look, this is getting silly. I'm really stupid about computers, but is this a virus or just bad housekeeping? Do you have to keep an eye on temp files all the time, like weeding a garden?

Where are these temp files? windows\temp? Anyway, if you have no applications open then go ahead and delete them...as long as you know for a fact that they're temporary. I would look at your Cool Edit setup. Sounds like it's storing backup copies of your files.

I've never seen temp files chew up half a disk...it's my guess that most of them are audio. Check cool edit and delete them.

Get out your pruning shears. Maintaining a HD can be as much work as keeping a catbox clean in a multiple cat household. You've got a CDR so why not write this junk to CDR and wipe it then see if everything that you wanted to save (non-temp files) still works. You'll only need to do this experiment once and I can almost guarantee the stuff you've saved to CDR will be useless.
A cheap pair of training wheels.
It's a lot easier to get on top of it before the garbage piles up past 650MB.

Hmm... 1.67 Gb according to Explorer. Glad to have you two on the case quick like Jack the Bear. I can go to bed now and sleep easier. Tomorrow early there will be a reckoning, and a pruning, and hopefully some breathing space. I don't think Dobro the Prune sounds very sexy though, do you?

Okay, what was tomorrow last night is now now.

I deleted all the Cool Edit temp files from Windows Temp, and freed up about 1.7 gigs on my hard drive!

Every time I had created a folder to put Cool Edit files in, a temp file had been created. Every time I recorded something, a temp file had been created. It was a case of the software that ate my hard disk.

I'm relieved to have a solution, but I'm wondering if this is a Cool Edit quirk, or if I'm doing something wrong (somebody suggested maybe I wasn't closing out of the program properly.) Anybody else have this problem, either with Cool Edit or anything else?

Thanks again, you two.

You ought to write yourself a little batch file and put a short cut on your desk top. That way, when you are done recording for the day, you can click on it and automatically delete all the *.tmp files that Windows is'nt catching for some reason.

I too wade through all the problems as you do. I was on the phone for tech help a week ago and one thing he had me do is go to the temp file folder. I ended having files from emailed jokes etc and alot of other crap
I didin't need either. I should have looked here first like you and the guru's would have saved me headaches galore

look in the cool edit preferences and options and see if there is a way too disable temp files..i know in acid and vegas it has an option to disable the creation of .sfk files...sorta the same thing.. :)

In Vegas the .sfk files are used to create the .wav displays you see in the main window.
They're generally orders of magnitude smaller than the .wav files they represent. And if you keep them, you can load .wav files instantly from your HD. I mean like NOW.
