Hey hey, my punk band F.A.T just recorded a new song on our own using a Tascam 414mkii and a Shure SM-58 mic (and a peavey pvm22 sometimes). We're all 15 and 16 and it would be great if you took a listen to it (the files not even 1 MB) and tell me what you think of the song and the job we did recording. Even better, try to give some tips... The song is soo much better live and one thing that I think attributes to that is the crappy distortion guitar tones we were getting, we want our recordings to be equal to our live-ness.

the site is at http://mp3.com/F_A_T

thanks

are you recording this all with 1 mic? live and in one shot? got a mixer? lots of energy for shure (freudian slip?) for only being 15 and 16 your gonna be alright in a few more years if you live that long (no disrespect) ahhhhhh........to be 15 again......hmmmmm.......my mind drifts off to a smokey haze.....

im 42 and new at home recording on my computer. check my twangy stuff out at

looking at your pics, you guys must have to fight off da women, big time...
demo is kinda tinny, but the 'tude is there...

charva..so how old IS your underware?:D

Charva...

We have limited money for obvious reasons... so what we did was mic my guitar, the other guitar, and the drums and recorded the three at the same time. Then we bounced the three onto a fourth track (we have a 4-track recorder). Then bass was played along to it and vocals and backup vocals were recorded on the 3 open tracks. Sorta wish we had access to more than 4 tracks so we COULD do it live all at once... we lost tons of energy in the recording.

Oh well, keep the comments coming, they're greatly appreciated.

Haha, that "Talk Birdy to Me" is a killer punk song man... (only one I listened to)

The recording isn't very good but if you are trying to be a punk band you nailed it man.....get a good recording and you are right there.

Reminds me of old N.Y.H.C.

old school for sure.

Keep it up!

yo

Not suprisingly, someone named nutdotnet has good taste. Thanks for the input. Sorta wished blue bear and Scriabin elaborated more... if ya dont like it tips would be good.

Keep em comin'

Haha, um thanks!

I think you are receiving a lot of the "not so helpful" comments due to the fact that there really isn't a lot of help to give you. You are using a very, very inexpensive setup for an entire band recording. You may be able to get a better sound with what you got, but I am not really sure.

Plus, I don't think Punk-Rock is one of the more popular genres on the bbs...

Fun song! Like punk should be. Punk these days is ridiculously pretentious.

The easiest thing you could do, and it would make a huge difference, is mix-down what you have with much lower vocals. Run the 4th track w/ drums and guitars up to almost max, then bring the vocals up. You've got all vox and no VOX.

If it were me, and optimizing sound quality were the goal, I'd use all 3 mics on the drums for 3 tracks and bounce them down to #4. Then use a mic and track for each amp, bounce to #3. Then bass on 2 and vocals on 1. This will give you much more choices in how you want to mix all the levels, and WAY fatter guitar.

For drums, mic the kick, snare, and have one overhead, somewhere. Check the drum forum. Spend some time with the 'search' function before posting a question. If the drummer has a hard time playing w/o the rest of the band, not unusual, try to set up your amps and PA facing away from the drums, and mics.

The vocal parts are simple enough to do one track.

"we lost tons of energy in the recording"- it takes practice! If you want to make recordings, you have to practice it. Just because you can play the song live, doesn't mean you can record it. It's a whole 'nother discipline.

One of you guys probably has a decent stereo tape recorder. If you get creative, there are lot's of ways to bounce around and increase track count. Of course, it sounds worse and worse every time you do....

...

thanks a lot ap... extemely helpful. Next song we record I'll definitely try out your technique. The fatter guitar part is my primo concern, on our older stuff we recorded the guitars direct (and back then we had 100 dollar squiers, rather than our current american strat and les paul) and they even seemed to sound better than the mic'd good guitars. probably mic placement issues.

anyways thanks for the contribution, big help
