Tele vs SG

If you like Deep Purple and Pink Floyd ( my main influences) get a Strat. You will not get the sound you want out of either the SG or the Tele. I have a Vintage SG custom, Sg standard, a tele, two strats and others. I have been playing and recording for 25 years.
Sooner or later, you will want a strat...........It will get you.

I love my SG - they are great rock & roll guitars and they are easy to get a good sound out of. I like my Tele, but I use it mostly for the "chickn pickn" country sounds (although many people get good rock & roll sounds from a Tele).

I think the Tele may be a better choice for a first guitar - since it can give you the clean sounds when you need them - and they can rock out when needed. I just don't think an SG can get "bright enough" for those time when you need that sound.

However, if I was only planning to play "heavier" rock and roll, and did not care about chickn pickn and other styles - then I would lean toward the SG.

While I agree that a Strat is also a must have guitar, I don't know if that is best for a first guitar - I've come to the conclusion that a Strat makes you work to get a good sound - whereas an SG (and to a less degree a Tele) don't require much work to get a good sound.

Strat vs Tele

Well... it seems there's been a change of plans...

I didn't think about the strat before because I wouldn't want to buy a relatively cheap strat as my first guitar... not a 'cheap' strat... In fact, strat has always been one of my all time favourite guitars, since most of my favourite guitarrists played strats... Hendrix, Gilmour, Clapton and so on...

The fundamental idea always has been: 'when the time to buy a strat arrives, I'll buy a really good one'...

I don't feel that towards a Tele or a SG... don't know why...

Btw: I've been offered the chance to buy an american strat for almost half the price... first hand... through a friend's friend...
What do you think about these deals?

(Personally, I have a 'not-so-good' feeling...)

Why the 'not so good' feeling? Is it one of those deals where he bought it at a fire sale and it's still smoking kind of thing? Even if it is still smoking, half off on an American made Strat...buy it. :D

a totally different take, which others may pan, but I love mine:

Epiphone Wildkat (two P90 pickups), semi hollow body, but small (a little bigger than an LP), looks nice, and has great tone if you can keep it from howling. I have played a tele, and yes, it is a nice guitar, but the wildkat suits my sound better, and sounds great through a blackface, really really great.

I don't see why people are still tossing out Ideas. You want the Gilmor sound? Get a strat. Not a godin or a P-90.

On another note, I didn't think the strat made me try as hard as my Tele. That thing is the hardest thing I have ever played. It made me work at technique so much more than anything I have ever played. The acoustic has a steep learning curve, but that Tele.....man.......I improved soooooooooo much form that thing alone. Every bad note is amplified 10 fold.

Like I said, you already have reservations about anything other than a strat. Just go for the strat and you will be happier.
