Tech21 Trademark 120:

Does anyone have any experience with this amp?

I curently have a Trademark 10 for recording purposes, but I may be doing some practicing/jamming/gigging where I'll need a bit more than 10 watts to cut above a *loud* drummer. The trademark 10 powers a 4x10 (Marshall 1965B) cab nice and loud, but I'm thinking I may need a bit more headroom than the Trademark 10 provides. The additional functionality of the Trademark 120 (3 channel footswitch with volume boost, etc.) would also be handy.

Any questions/comments/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Due to the overwhelming response to my post (he-he), I decided to say "screw it!" and I purchased a used Marshall Valvestate 100 head to use instead (with my 4x10 cabinet). I jammed with the drummer the other night, and the Trademark 10 and 4x10 cabinet just did *not* cut it. I ended up using the drummer's spare amp, a Marshall Valvestate 100 head and 4x12 cab, which worked perfectly.

The valvestate will work fine for jamming and gigging, as it has the footswitch feature and a "decent" tone that's good enough for a live sound. ...But for recording, I will use the Trademark 10, as it gets the best tone for recording that I've been able to get out of any amp!! It sounds even sweeter through the 4x10 than through its own built-in 8" speaker, so now I'll have some more useful guitar tones to use for recording.

I saved myself a whole bunch of cash and headaches by going with the Marshall, and I'm sure I'll grow to appreciate it more as time goes on.

When you record with that amp - do you go direct of do you close mic it?

For guitars, I have always close mic'd the Trademark 10 with an SM57, using the built-in speaker. Now that I have the 4x10 cab and can crank it up a bit more (as it sounds better the louder it gets), I'm sure I'll try some more ambient mic-ing techniques.

I used the Trademark 10 / SM57 combination to record all the electric guitars in "Hindsight is 20/20" and "War13", which can be found here: www.soundclick.com/bands/9/mrmoonmusic.htm

For bass guitar, I run the signal through an ART TPS preamp => Trademark 10 => XLR out into my sound card. I recorded the bass for "Hindsight is 20/20" using this technique, and I think it really sounds great!!

Have you tried running your Trademark 10 into the Marshall VS's Line Input?

I used to mic mine but I found tha it's direct sounds always seem to mix a little better. I now use a 16 track so I am recording both and blending. The result is phenomenal for a little 10 watt amp.

Nope, not yet. I may give that a shot for recording, but live I'll probably just stick to the Marshall alone, as it has the footswitchable channels that the Trademark 10 doesn't. ...Which is too bad, 'cuz I love the sounds I get from the Trademark 10, but without the footswitch it would be hard to use live. :(

Get a monoblock power amp for that cab...I use a GT2 through a sunn 200b for tube warmth then through a 4-12.

Tech21 makes kick ass stuff.
