Hello people

Apologies if this has been covered again but I'm kind of desperate. My 80-8's record button has finally stopped working after months of being able to cheat it by operating the reed switch manual with a pair of tweezers. So I need to replace it asap (especially as my band need to finish off some recordings yesterday!). Does anyone know where to get a replacement reed switch for the record button of a 80-8? Any info at all about them would be appreciated, especially if there's somewhere in the UK that has them. Thanks for reading!

Indeed it may be a difficult proposition for parts but I would contact someone in TASCAM UK, someone who knows analog there, in the parts dept, for example, or find another 80-8 that you can use for parts. I don't have that part # at hand but if you could find out, maybe other TEAC / TASCAM recorders share that same switch assembly. Best thing may be to call and ask for the parts dept at: http://www.tascam.de/en/kontakt.html

...or even call parts dept (speak to Jimi) over at TASCAM USA: (323) 727-4840

Doggone-- Jimi Yamamoto? Is he still there? He was there when I worked there almost 25 years ago!

It has been that long since I worked on an 80-8, but I think they had a remote-control option, didn't they? If so, you could buy or borrow one, or even make a cheap one, just to keep you running until you can take the time to get the machine fixed right.

If he's the same Jimi then that's him! He's Japanese ? Cool! Not even a hint of an accent!! :D ;)

That's a great idea, by-passing the bad rec switch. There was indeed a remote option.

I'm pretty sure the 80-8's remote connection (at the back) is of the 12 pin type and thus the TEAC / TASCAM RC-70 or RC-71 remotes could work. See if you could find one on eBay or borrow one from someone.

I know that the RC-70 and RC-71 work on several different TEAC and TASCAM recorders. I have a feeling they would work on your 80-8. Can someone please confirm this for me ?

The TEAC RC-90 may also work. It's 12 pin type too.

TEAC RC-70
TASCAM RC-71
TEAC RC-90

Guys, I'd feel better if someone would confirm about the remotes and the 80-8.

Not that it matters, but I think I got the name wrong yesterday. It should have been Yamaguchi, not Yamamoto, and it must not be the same one, because Yamaguchi had quite an accent. We were joking about his saying he was in school eighty years, because he couldn't say "eight years" without putting the extra vowel sound in there.

If it's just a bog-standard reed switch, Maplin have a selection of them.
