Teac cx650r

I have a TEAC CX650R cassette deck. The pinch rollers move, but the spindles won't rotate. Hence, the tapes won't play. The unit was supposedly serviced last month according to the guy I got it from. It's a very clean unit. I wonder if the top motor which turns the spindles is blown. When I took off the top cover and pressed "play" the motor does not move.

Can anyone help me diagnose this issue?

It seems to be belt drive, so that would be the first thing to check.

The capstan is belt drive. The reel tables, which I believe was said as not turning, would probably be cam drive. And pinch rollers only turn when the capstan is driving them. So it's likely not a capstan belt at least.

It's also fairly unlikely that the motor itself died and more likely something in support of it is at fault and as such will probably require a trip to the repair shop to trouble shoot.

Cheers! :)

I agree that it looks like wiring, fuse, capacitor, or something. Could a fuse cause this?

In a consumer cassette deck, its likely to only have one main fuse and if there were two, one would be for the transport and the other, for the electronics. So I'd rule out something as easy as that.

Have you opened up the deck yet to take a peak? And would you be able to know what you're looking at? If you don't have the technical experience, there's no shame in taking it to a repair shop.

Cheers! :)

I opened it, not sure what I'm looking at. Prob is that there are NO repair shops locally. I can't believe it! Thanks.

Well, the only thing I could suggest is if you have a decent camera, maybe try taking a few clear shots of the transport from a top down angle that shows all the parts. Maybe one of us here might be able to spot something from that. Failing that, do a broader search for a repair shop and get ready for a road trip!

Cheers! :)

First this is a real old cassette deck and I suspect that if the problem was not the belt then the motor could be defective or at least have a dead spot on the Commutator. These older units and I do have one here will only keep on going as long as they are properly maintained. That means they need new rubber parts, new slip clutches and Idler tires and oiling of flywheels and a good cleaning. As I have worked on Teac decks a long time about 40 years, there have been a number of things that could be affecting the deck including power supply, cassette in switch, and broken solder joints. The only way to get the unit running is to have a good Teac service technician work on it and give you his opinion. There are two original Teac Factory Service Technicians still operating. One is in Chicago (Me) and the other is in New Jersey (Russ Bachmann). We both still take units in for service and I as being well known from another forum concerning tape (TH.net), am very busy with units coming in- Studers, Otari and Tascam units. I think you are dealing with a bad reel motor but you would need to measure voltage going to it to determine.

Sounds accurate, as I cannot find any oddity when I open the unit. It was serviced before it was shipped to me. It's really clean inside, so only a tech could find a problem.
