Hi, wonder if someone could point me in the right direction regarding a problem that just happened with my 80-8. The left hub seems to have come loose inside, and wont hold the tape securely anymore, when it is threaded on the machine, it won't stay tight, and sort of droops down. I wonder if there is a belt back there, or if it's a motor problem.
It's been a great machine, but I am afraid of what may happen if I take it for service. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your reply. I will try to get a pic up, if you are looking at the 80-8, it is the hub on the left. There is no resistance when you turn the hub, and the tape will not stay tight when the machine is in idle. I have been reading posts, and am wondering if there is a belt broken (capstain?) and weather I could fix it, if I can find one, or weather it is something for a service person. It is a great machine, but I am afraid of paying a small fortune, which I don't have, to get it back running.
Thanks again,
Brett

OK, if I understand it correct, you can mount / lock the reel in place, onto the plastic hub, without a problem but the platter to which it is mounted [which in turn is mounted directly to the left reel motor] has absolutely no resistance and thus spins freely, when very little resistance is placed on it, even if idle, correct? This sounds to me like the brakes need adjustment. It's possible too that the solenoid, which engages the brakes is gummed up. If you're comfortable, open the machine up [best with a service manual, available from TASCAM] and have a look in there. Let us know.

Also, have you tried holding the left reel and then pressing play? You're in essence acting as part of the brake and keeping the tape from spilling just prior to pressing play. It should work fine. Of course, when you press stop, it'll probably spill tape again. I would not try FF / REW cause you might have a major spill. If you try what I suggest and it behaves is such a manner then it's most certainly the brake.

Thanks very much for the great advice. I will tinker with it over the weekend, and let you know. I very much appreciate your help!
