Does anyone have any ideas about where to start with this problem? THe signal gets through to the VUs for 2 & 4 but it never records. I have the SM for the 2340 but just really don't know where to start.

Thanks,
Sean

I'd start by looking at the simul sync switch board. Take the head cover off and unscrew the board (2 screws). Try and see if there are any cracks in the pcb. It's very common those get cracked because the switches are so easy to accidently hit. Everything goes through that board. Also play with the switches. They get dirty and get bad connections.

It's a starting point but it could be many other things.

not sure how 'sperienced you are but the very first thing i'd check is are the heads spotless? and tape guides whle you're at it. dirty heads can 'eff' up a recording as well as anything else.
use at least 91% isopropyl alcohol on q-tips to clean them. i do it after every tape play/pass. can make a huge difference.

Which 2340 is it? does it have simul-sync (switches on the head cover) or is is just a simul-track model (no switches)?

Thank you guys for the suggestions...

It looks like all i needed to do was really blast the switches from the side with some contact cleaner -- i had just been spraying it "into" the switch housing from the outside which is apparently not good enough.

Also, are the tracks not recording at all, or are they just blank? DEMAG DEMAG DEMAG! I nearly old one of my reel decks a few years back thinging it had crapped out and would not record - just needed a good cleanign and demaging.
