I own a 710CE and it rocks. I will say this though- I much prefer the Fishman stereo blender in my 710, circa 2001, to the expression system in the new ones. If I were going to buy one, I'd look for an older unit with the stereo blender. It's far more versatile than ES.-Richie

Thanks Richie, and i agree I have an older 810 ce and I want to retire it but i like the fishman better.

It's personal preference. Just listen close and see how it feels. When shopping around for a high-end guitar, I tried many brands. The Taylors stood out to me. Love the sound, the feel, the look. In 2002, I ordered an 814c -- no electronics, no holes. I ordered without (saved $200) and installed my own PUTW pu/pa system. I suppose I understand why people buy acoustic guitars with installed electronics, but to me, because acoustic pickup/preamp systems are ever-evolving, why limit yourself when there are so many available options. If I ever want ES, I can have a passive system (and perhaps the K4) installed. I will own a Martin someday, but IMO, Taylors are sweet.

For general recording I'd go for the D-18 if it is indeed a real D-18 and not one of the laminate guitars. I have Martins and Taylors and neither is a one size fits all but if I could only have one, it would be the Martin Dreadnaught.

If you already have an 810, I'd get a D-18 because they have very different voices. The 710 and the 810 sound pretty close to each other. You always are better off having tone variations available in a studio.

I'd even go so far as to say if you already have a dred in the studio, to for a GA or Jumbo so you have a really different sound in there. The more tonal possibilities the better.

You'll probably find that the Taylor is easier to record acoustically than the D-18. They tend to be more balanced and don't have the thundering bass of Martin dreads. I'd go for a smaller X14 or 000 size guitar.

Hmm intresting thoughts from all replies thanks for the feed back
