What instrument is used to play the melody in the theme song to the retro tv series 'taxi'? Anyone know where to get a good soundfont for this sound?

Thanks,
Peter.

I'm pretty sure that it's a Rhodes. You could download Mr. Ray (on a trial basis) and purchase if you like it.

Retro?

You do know Taxi was made in the 70s, right? Exactly the same decade as it's set in?

Personally I'm pretty sure that doesn't qualify as retro.

Vintage, sure, but not retro.

Three comments...

1. I downloaded Mr. Ray but can't get it to work; no sound. So far, all that I can get to work is the sound blaster keyboard with a midi controller by loading sf2 soundfonts. I have sound blaster Live. Anyone know why I can't get any of the other midi software programs to work; create a sound... was I supposed to change a setting somewhere.

2. I downloaded some Rhodes piano sf2 but so far they sound nothing like the melody in Taxi and I'm not referring the quality... I literally mean that it does not even sound like it is the correct instrument. Can someone send me a link to an sf2 file that sounds the most like the theme to Taxi or give me some advice to get Mr. Ray to work? Thanks.

3. Oops for being wrong about taxi being retro but I thought that it lasted into the early 80's. Actually, I am correct on that one... it aired from 78-83 so I think that calling it retro is acceptable unless of course the song itself was written in the 70's which it was... just semantics...

Thanks,
Peter.

It's possible that the theme used a Yamaha CP-30.

I haven't heard the tune since I stopped watching it on Nick At Nite in the 90's.

That would definitely be a Rhodes

by one of the masters of the Rhodes, Bob James.

Thanks for taking me back

to the halcion days of 70's session jazz. Bob James, Tom Scott, Eric Gale, Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson, and on and on and on...

Slightly OT, but I saw Bob James at the Mt Hood Festival of Jazz a few years ago. Definitely one of the better acts there. He saved "Angela's Theme" for last. Crowd went wild!

Not free or even cheap  , but Lounge Lizard from AAS does some nice e-pianos.

Take Care

anyone know of a good sf2 that sounds like the melody in Taxi... I've tried rhodes and others but can't seem to match that soft sound of the late 70's early 80's... anyone have a link for me?

The cold hard fact of it is that Rhodes emulations miss the mark by a pretty wide margin.

Get a real Rhodes. If you live anywhere near me, I'm selling mine.

Carl

I intend on buying a roland xp-30 when one becomes available in Canada (no rhodes)... what is the most Taxi-like-sounding sf2 around?
