Hi. I just picked up a Tascam Porta 07 at a yard sale and I have a Fostex XR-7 already. I figured I'd ask if anyone knew which was better, had more features, was easier to use, had better sound, etc. I'll keep the better of the two and give one to a friend. The only difference I can see is that the Fostex seems to have more bells and whistles but I can't really tell if that's just in the packaging of the box itself or what. All help is appreciated. Please email alex@alexsniderman.com with any responses. Thanks.

Forget about fostex, GET TASCAM.

I own a 414, is the best,
I use the roland DP-2 pedal for punch in/out.
great machine.

again, IMHO, TASCAM wins always over other 4-track.

I've mentioned this a couple of times. I've torn into each and the Tascam wins.

Just gotta say....

that my old Fostex X-26 was the best sounding 4 track cassette of it's time. What you heard while monitoring to tape was exactly what you heard coming off of the tape, and the meters were extremely accurate. These are both things I could never count on with any of the Tascam analog tape based products, to include their 1" 16 track, 488, and all the PortaJunk stuff.

Fostex makes some of the best record/playback heads in the business. Their quality control standards are quite high.

Many people don't know that Fostex in Japan is like JBL over here. They make some fine sounding speaker systems. Not that speakers and recording machines have a whole lot in common, but I think that Fostex is a fine company that makes very good products.

My D-5 DAT machine is over 3 1/2 years old now, and has seen some serious use with no problems what so ever. At the time, it was over $500 cheaper then a comparable Tascam DA series DAT machine.

I am no Tascam fan. Yes, they generally make dependable products mechanically speaking, but I have never been impressed with the sound quality of their gear, ANY of it. Don't let Tascam's reputation of reliability be the only deciding factor. Plenty of other companies have a very good reputation with making quality products that are reliable.

Tascam vs Fostex?

Correct answer: Yamaha.

The Yamaha MT2X I use for years are flexible, good sounding, easy to use, has direct outs if you use a separate mixer, crystal clear dbx noise reduction, and just about any feature you can think of. The later MTX's with more feature packed mixers are sure to be even better.

I love it!

I have a Tascam Porta 5, and a Fostex x-26. The Tascam is superior not only in sound quality, but design and construction as well. I also have a Fostex 8 track reel and an older Teac 4 track reel. Sound quality is similar, but the Teac is superior in design and constuction once again. The Fostex has a beefy and substantial looking exterior, but inside it looks tacky and cheaply constructed. Lots of plastic. Definitely not open architecture design.
