I'm looking at a used USB interface, and I've found several M-Audio units and a buch of Tascam US122s. I've had good experinces with Tascam in the past and this unit was reccomended to me earlier, but it's got me wondering about the M-audio stuff. I'm not concerned about built in preamps, as I'll be using some seperate preamps and a mixer. At $120, the Tascam is looking awfully tempting :D What do you think?
Thanks

Hey Kyle,

I am very much a newbie in this area - having picked up my very first audio interface just the other day. The Tascam US-122 was my initial choice (I opted for the Lexicon Omega), until I read somewhere that the 'Bus Powering' of that (or any) unit may not yield enough phantom power for condensor mics. But that concern shouldn't be an issue for you being that you will be utilizing an external pre. I can't speak for the M-Audio offerings, but that Tascam is built like a tank and I really did like the design & feel of it. On top of that, I had read many favorable reviews on it to boot. At $120? Pretty tempting indeed - IMO.

I've had a US122 for a couple of years and really like it. But now that you can get a FireBox for $300, that's what I'd get.

I own the US-122 and would recommend it. If I were buying a USB interface today, I would also consider the M-Audio Fast Track Pro, which has a few more bells and whistles and can be either bus powered or AC powered.

Apl's recommendation to check out firewire interfaces is also valid.

I have the US-122 and it sounds really good. A Firewire solution is probably better but if you only record 1-2 sources at a time, the US-122 is awesome. I have heard many people say it is better than the M-Audio Mobilepre but I can't confirm that.
