I see that the US-428 does not have phantom power. how's the gain staging? if i keep my M-audio duo (which has phantom power) and connect its output to the input of the US-428 I should be able to get good sound into the laptop.

i've heard that the converters on the US-428 aren't so great, but I've gotten really good results from WaveCenter/Tango24 that Frontier Design Group makes independent of Tascam.

otherwise, i'm just going to get the VxPocket v2 instead. i don't need the mixer functionality, i need clean audio.

I think you're much better off just getting the VX pocket. I don't think USB is such a great idea for audio.

Why do people bag on USB audio? I don't get it. It works fine as long as you don't need more than 4 tracks recorded at once. Had my 428 for over a year now and I've never had any problems with it.

That's not aimed at you, polaris, but I've seen this kind of comment noised about a lot and it comes from number crunchers talking about the datastream capabilities of USB. Sure its not hot, but it does the job for 4 channels of audio. Its an option, it works, and just like every other option it has its pros and cons.

Cross, I'm not sure how the 428's converters stack up against other things, but they sound clean to me. I've used them straught and with several pres and its easy to get good levels either way. I'm not the best recordist, but you can hear some of my better stuff linked off my website if you like. All of the songs were recorded through the 428.

Take care,
Chris

Chris,

was "The Mouse and The Eagle" recorded with the Tascam US-428?

If so, can you answer the following questions:

what mic did you use on vocals?

what mic did you use on guitar?

what pre-amp are you using with the US-428?

how many layered rythm guitar tracks are you using. if that's just a rhythm and a lead, then you must have either double mic'd the rhythm track or you are using a 12-string.... right!

"come out and play" was my favorite.

ps. you've got a well defined voice. very good for your style of music.

Chriss,

I don't say it doesn't work well, I just question why we should use it instead of PCI. NEver change a winning team I say. And pure theoratically, USB is slower. So I don't doubt USB has its qualities, I don't know why I should switch to it.
