I could use all the 14 channels of A/D conversion, but is this unit a decent converter? I have the M-Audio Fast track ultra, which only has 4 preamps, 6 analog inputs, which isn't really enough for my purposes anymore.

I got the Zoom R16 for Christmas, i'm sending it back monday, the thing was a peice of junk. I plugged in my mic into a preamp, the preamp into the (line level) Zoom R16, turned the faders all the way down, and it clipped like mad at -oo. Great...

Anyway, would this tascam work for my purposes, would it be adaquate A/D conversion for a home studio, or should i save for something better?

Thanks in advance.

Do a search in this forum. Someone was using the 1641 with Vista and 13 tracks with no issues
Thanks for the tip on the Zoom R16, as it was a consideration
I have the Tascam M-164UF on order. Mixer with 16 USB In's & stereo return 24/96 http://tascam.com/products/m-164uf.html

Yeah, np on the Zoom, i called to get the RA number today.

I did a search, most people seemed to not get the tascam because 16 channels is basically the HIGHEST amount of channels a USB 2.0 mixer can deal with, which means it can't be expanded.

I didn't read anything on the quality of the conversion though, which is mainly what i'm interested in, i rarely need to record 16 tracks simul. anyway, right now 8 is basically my highest.

I have another question about getting the signals into a A/D box that is more than 8 channels, without preamps.

I was wondering how a mixer would be used to do it. I mean, you could use aux. busses, but how many mixers have more than 8 of those, at least with outs? I've also seen direct outs, but then it's no longer controled by the fader and doesn't go to the master if i've ready correctly, or would sends and returns be used (again not controled by faders), i don't know. It would be something i'd be more curious about in the future than now, but i guess it's worth asking the question (kind of in the wrong forum i guess)
