i have a tascam us-122 preamp and an emu 0404... PCI digital audio card. Am i missing something? should i hook up the tascam to the pci card? right now i have it hooked up USB. Is there anything I'm missing? I don't know if i'm losing sound quality or increasing latency by this set up. If someone could please explain it to me it would save me from pulling my hair out.
Thanks
D

You can use one or the other, but not both. The US122 can only plug into USB.

usb Tascam

Which way is better to go for digital audio? I'm kind of dissapointed that i spent 250 bucks on the TASCAM and another bundle on the PCI card when the computer was built and I can't use both of them! :) Which will offer the best flexibility, quality, etc.?

The Tascam is great for mobile recording using a laptop, but it's fairly pointless to get a unit like that for a fixed workstation. Your pci card probably works better on your workstation.

Tip: Never, ever buy stuff if you don't know exactly what it does (including how to hook it up, if it's compatable with your other gear etc.)

I use a 122 at home on the desktop. I think it's great, I like having the knobs easy to reach and I didn't need to buy seperate preamps.

I agree, I dont find it pointless at all. PCI cards mean work, usb/firewire is for lazy bums like me.

PLUS: if you do get a laptop, you already have your audio interface. Or you can take it to a friends, assuming you have friends :D

I just got an m-audio firewire solo and am really digging it. Plug it in and go, sounds great. It also saves a wall-wart, no power supply needed.

Ok I retract that statement. However, I don't think you'll get much use out of both of them.

good advice

Thanks all for your responses. I have a desktop and obviously I'm pretty new at this. So to recap, PCI card and TASCAM accomplish the same task???
Which is better for digital audio? I am recording an acoustic electric guitar and voice through mic. Thanks again.

Yes, they both convert sound to computer files. However, the emu doesn't seem to have microphone preamps. The quality of results are probably comparable.
