This is very stupid question. I just got a Tascam TSR 8 in perfect condition, however the take up reel is a little different than my old Fostex R8. Quite simply, I can'y fihure out how to keep the tape on the take up reel. There is no clamp or slot like what I've seen before. Am I supposed to use adhesive tape to keep the recording tape on the reel. I've used these before, but I;ve never threaded the tape. All wisdom on this idiotic question is appreciated.

I can recall on old reel-to-reel players that some take up reels had no way to hold the tape captive. You'd just thread a couple of turns on the reel and go.

Is the center hub of the reel plastic or is it metal?

If it's just a stock AMPEX type reel with a plastic hub you can take the screws out, remove the reel flanges and sand the surface of the hub with # 400 sandpaper. Just roll the hub a few times with the sand paper making contact with where the tape would. After sanding wash the hub under running water and put it in front of a fan to dry.

This will increase the grip and make threading the tape much easier. Some of the plastic hubs are just too slick… it’s a pain.

They are plastic...Thanks for the tip...tht sounds like a good idea.
