i picked up one for 300 bucks, and i was wondering if that was a good price, and also im very confused about it. if you know anything about it let me know so i can ask.
Considering the list price is $1200, I'd say $300 is a good buy --- if (and only if) everything works.
Since it's a digital mixer you'd probably do best to post specific questions about operating it in the 'Mixing + Mastering' forum. Your questions will probably draw the quickest and best answers there.
I have one I bought for $500 new. It's quiet, lots of signal routing options (I currently am using the S/PDIF, TDIF, AES/EBU, TRS and RCA outputs). It's limited to 48KHz 24 bit recording/playback, has 4 phantom powered mic inputs (but I use a preamp plugged into 7 & 8) and is very easy to set up. Mine feeds an IF-TAD converter to change the TDIF to ADAT lightpipe for the sound card, and I use the "Direct Out" routing so I potentially have 8 discrete outs. If you assign buses you get a total of 4. I particularly like the "split console" option: Ch 1-8 are inputs to the computer, Ch 9-16 are playback. The Monitor outs go to powered BX8s, the stereo outs (RCA) feed a headphone amp, the S/PDIF out goes into a Tascam US428 which drives an amp w passive speakers for playback and I have a set of headphones plugged into the TM-D1000, which is 4 independently controllable systems.
The "Mute" buttons are incredibly handy when recording: I spent last week recording an acoustic duo in the Austin area and I kept 4 mics set up and controlled which ones were live with the mutes and never had to mess much with setting levels after the first setup. I have mine mounted in a rack, by the way: I'd be lost without the rackears. Here's a link to some tutorials: http://www.tascamcontractor.com/tmd1000users/
