Tascam T38..S?

My local electronics store is trying to sell me an 8 track recorder, and he says the model number is T38S. I've looked everywhere, and I can't find any info about this product. I only saw it in a fleeting glance, but I don't think I saw any reels? Maybe it was flat on the shelf. I also have a sneaking suspicion it might just be a mixer or something; I'm relatively new to all this.

Can anyone help me figure out what this is?

My guess would be the Tascam 38. It's not exactly flat, though - it's about the size of a desktop PC.

Currently there is a picture of one here:

...but since that one is sold it may disappear later. A google image search will work though...

It could be a 38 or TSR8 as well but the way you describe it being flat, looking like a mixer it could be the 388 which is a mixer and reel together. With any of those you can't lose if they're working. What color was it? Black or Brown?
