Tascam Portastudio 464, can I fix it myself?

I recently got a Portastudio 464 off of ebay, and I got to use it for a week or so before the record function stopped working. FF and RW work, and play works occasionally. However whenever I try to record the reels stop spinning and the heads pop out for a second then just give up. The record button LED blinks, which leads me to think this is a common problem.
I was wondering if anybody with more experience with these machines could help me narrow down the problem, I have a soldering iron if necessary.

I find swearing at things often works...

Dude, check out the list of fora available at HR and you'll find there's a Tascam forum... you might want to repost there - you might be more likely to get someone who knows about your machine.

If that doesn't work, go back to swearing...

Not familiar with that particular transport, but my first guess would be rubber drive componenets. Belts, idlers, whatever it uses to transfer the energy from the motor to the capstan.

I'm having the exact same problem! I'm trying to make some digital archives of my old 4-track recordings and much to my dismay, my PortaStudio 464's play/record mode doesn't seem to remain engaged.

Were you able to get yours working?

Jon

incidentally, if I put no tape in and I manually hold in the record-protect sensors, I can get it to stay in the play or record mode. When I put in a tape . . . they only engage for a second or so.
