I've had the TASCAM Porta 05 for a long time, but have not used it a great deal. Now I have pulled it out and want to do some personal recording, primarily a small folk/bluegrass band I've started.

The question is, can I record (actually plug in microphones) to all four lines on the Porta 05? If so, how do I do it. If not, why not (oh, forget that one) - rather what are the lines for?

I recognize this is an old system (open to advice on a new system - just don't want it to cost a fortune). I want to download recordings to my computer and burn CDs. Can I mix the product again once I've downloaded it? (I have a NERO burner).

Thanks for any help/advice you can give

I am too drunk to check it out now, but I believe the Porta 05 only allows mics to br inputted into channels one and two. Three and four would require a preamp.

Not many small cassette based 4 track portastudios allow for 4 tracks simultaneous record. Not too many digital 4tks either.

If you can get an external mixer for the 4 mics, youcan mix to 2 tracks if you can get away with it. Then that opens you up to a lot of options, tape, or cheapo digital.

I had a Fostex X-15, 2 tk record, a Sony digital Minidisk 2 tk record, and now a Fostex MR-8 8track digital, 2 tk record. Fostex X-15 is from 1985 ~ $300? Sony 5 years old maybe ~ $600, MR-8 ~ $300.

I guess it does not qualify as "small", but the 244 4 track cassette machine allows for recording on all four tracks at once.

Thanks junplugged & Derek. Derek, what is a 244? What would one cost?

Thanks,

Jim

Damn it! I never should have told you about that listing. Now I will have to bid higher.
