tascam porta 03

i just got a tascam porta 03, 4 track and i cant seem to get it to work.
i just bought a shure sm75 mic for it aswell. does that need batteries?
please help.

The SM57 does not need batteries. It is what's called a 'dynamic' microphone. Dynamic mics of the corded variety do not require batteries (there may be some exceptions out there, this isn't one of them though).

Maybe if you run through the steps you are taking i'll be able to help more.
