Maybe I'm too old, or am doing something right. :)
I have read some other posts thruout the other boards on how the TASCAM Porta I,II,III 4 tracks are crappy,bad,ect... I have used my Porta 03,MKII for years now and have been making some really cool songs. I play synths, guitar-acoustic-metal and nylon string, electic gutair and bass and have several drum machines.I sing also, in two part harmony. I have pulled off tracks that have made other pro recording studios techs, jaws drop. Now I am recording from the 4-track to CD/R on my computer with awesome results. I hear very little tape hiss and hardly no pops when I "punch in" new sounds on the same track. I think "volume levels" are the key to my success. I am not trying to claim myself as perfect, who is, right? But making music with less $$$$ equipment doesn't limit my creativity. :)

Hey, if it works for ya...

...keep at it! Who cares what other people say if you're happy with what you're accomplishing, right???

Hey you said it! You just helped me out a great deal. I just read your reply to "Cel" about the "famous" PortaStudio 10-track bounce. I never thought of doing that before. This gives me way more options. Thanks.

With good recording technique,It's amazing how good a cassette multitrack can be and sound on Tascams Porta line. And for so little money! Any truth to the story that Springsteens "The River" was done on the Teac or is it the Tascam144? The 1st model multitrack cassette deck? I heard a story years ago that he walked around with the master tape in his pocket for a few days

I'd heard the Springsteen story, but I don't know if it's true or not... people are fond of saying The Beatles recorded Sergeant Pepper's on 4-track too. What they neglect to say is the quality of the 4-track they did use was 100 times ABOVE the calibre of a PortaStudio!!!

Could be similar for the Springsteen story...

isn't that the truth Bruce. I'm curious because of the "tape in pocket" aspect of the story which would have to be a cassette. If your out there Bruce we'd love to hear from ya. Rob

Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" album (not "The River") was recorded on a 4-track cassette machine. I think it was the 144, but I'm not sure. I also read that he carried the master tape around for awhile in his pocket, and I believe it. I'm sure that when it came time to release it commercially, they cleaned it up big time.

It's a great album (er, CD). If you don't have it, pick up a copy and enjoy!
