Anyone have any experience with this? I was at Sam Ash yesterday and saw it, and need to upgrade as Im doing my recording on an old 350 mhz pc, with 128 mb of ram, etc. Its old. The thing that drew me to this was its size (really small) and USB support, effects, etc. Now, i didnt stick around to talk to anyone (service is terrible there and you guys probably know more) but can anyone tell me about this. One problem, is right now, Im gonna be the only one recoding, and I think it had one mic input with a preamp, but if I want to record with others later, it would become a problem. So, just let me know ALL about it if possible :) Id love to hear what you guys think, have to say, and suggestions. Here is a ling:

Stay away!

If you are really interested go to the TASCAM online forums and check out the section there.

Ask these guys to listen to a few of thier mixes and you will not even consider it. Besides, four tracks? I'd rather have a portastudio.

It's a toy. Cool for composing on the road but for quality stick to your computer. Spend that cash on a used Lynx one card and a mixer.

Thanks jake, ill steer clear of those. Is my computer fast enough or powerful enough to really record though. Ill give you some of the specs. I could always get a Mac (I was actually supposed to get a 17" Powerbook for Graduation, but my parents kinda backed out) but Id have to save some more money and have nothing left for gear or other goods. Right now, I have a K6-2 350mhz processor, 128mb of ram, some Creative Labs Ensoniq crap sound card (I think a ES1371, at least those were the drivers I used in linux), and just some crap mic. So, if that is good, Ill need to get a new soundcard, a couple new mics, and a mixer you say. A lynx sound card, I dont know much about those, or any of this stuff for that matter. So, could you give me a little background about this stuff that you recommended. Id love to hear more about it and what you think a good idea is. Thanks a lot jake, I appreciate it :)

No problem. Your computer is going to be ok to do some minor recording and mixing. You should find out what is the max speed processor your motherboard will take and upgrade that.

The Lynx one card was the greatest card for that generation of computer so it should be a good match for your hardware plus they go for super cheap on ebay these days.

Ok, so that one's not so cheap but I've seen them go for cheap.

Hey wait a sec...does your sondcard have SPDIF inputs?
If so you could just pick up a mixer with a SPDIF output and skip the soundcard altogether.

This will seem spammy but I have a mixer on ebay right now with SPDIF outs. It is an unbelievable deal at the price it's at now but I wasn't expecting to let it go for quite so cheap...

Which software are you planning on using? This mixer will control faders in Cubase, Logic and a few others so it makes a great computer recording mixer.

These are great, simple soundcards...but you will need a mixer or preamps.

Surf this site and do a few searches on here site and on ebay and you will get a better idea of what you need.

Good luck!

Have to agree. The PS5 bombed in the market - I just saw one 'like new' at a local store for 199.

The forum on the Tascam board is pretty funny though - a couple dictators try to run off anyone who questions the feature set. I returned mine almost a year a go, but still go back for laughs.

Someone else was getting lured into this toy recorder so....BUMPARROONIE!

Agree,the Pocket ain't a "rocket".
Get a 788 instead...it's just a little more money..
