TASCAM - MS16, 1" reel to reel

I'm moving up from 8 track analog to a
Tascam 16 track 1" reel unit. I would
like to build a thread with others who
use the MS16.
 
+ 16 db

I've been told by that a Tascam MS16 runs
at +16 DB. Would someone explain what that
is all about. Secondly, does it require a
certian mixing board function to operate
correctly ?

Uhm... +16dB would be major weirdness... :confused:
Normal levels are -10dB or +4dB.

You want to make sure that your mixing desk is happy with the levels the Tascam runs on to work correctly.
 
Last time I checked the MS-16 was a 1/2" 16 track machine and was soon joined by the MS-24 which was a 1" 24 track machine.They both ran at Tascam's standard -10db level.
 
MSR-16

I have an MSR-16 and it's 1/2" but he might be right that the MS-16 is 1"...I'm not positive, but he might be. Hey, you want to find out, go to Ebay and look around for one.

The MSR-16 is great, I love it. I don't use it much anymore because I use Cubase. I might sync it up and use it as well in the near future. The thing sounds great!

The gentlemen with the MS16 specified it to be
a 1" machine. It concerns me that two people
in this thread have said it was a 1/2" machine.
I've got to drive 10 hours to pick it up. Wouldn't
that be a dissapointment for me ? wow...

Hi CMiller,

I bought the MS16 this past weekend. It is a one
inch machine. I did 1200 miles to pick it up - ughhhh.
Anyhow, the owner said he has used the 499 tape on the
unit for sometime. He liked it better than the 456; lower
noise floor. There is also a non-shedding 499. - Has
anyone heard about Tascam discontinuing their analog reel
parts ? There is a mean rumor going around - coming from
the TASCAM analog techy - scary stuff for me.

Yeah, I've heard that Tascam rumour too. It wouldn't surprise me if it were true. But I don't know for sure either way.

I haven't used the 499, but I've heard the same thing you have...lower noise, etc. I use the 456 and it's fine for what I do.

I made a mistake when I said the MS16
runs at a +16 db. It runs at +4 DB.

Punching in on MS16

The MS16 dosn't have a jack for plugging
in a punch foot pedal. The gear was made for
the engineer in the control room, while the
musicians do their thing. The suggestion is
to play on the next track beside the bad part,
and then dump to a third track. - I was used
to having a foot pedal on my other gear.I've
decided to add on a tap system; a pedal that
will trigger a tap to the record and play
button. I will then have my foot pedal back.
